Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Lack of knowledge on the phenology of major mangrove tree species for proper seed collection, to monitor changes in the behavior of mangrove tree species with the change in salinity and other environmental factors of the Sundarbans which are very much essential for proper management and sustainable production of the forests.Salinity zones also play a great role for bearing flowers and fruits in different zones of the Sundarbans. Even flowering and fruiting also vary year to year. Good seed year of major mangrove species recurrence after one year interval.

Objectives:

a) To observe the timing of leafing, flowering, fruiting and fruit production of major mangrove species .

b) To determine the interval of good seed year of major mangrove species.

C) To increase the productivity of the forests by higher genetic gain and control of pests and diseases,

Methodology:

It was conducted the following activities for long term monitoring by Selecting and marking of trees. observing time of leaf appearance, leaf shedding, flowering, fruiting, seed maturation, dropping period and seed production of selected mother trees,maintenance of selected trees for phenological studies throughout the year to fullfil the objectives.

Achievement/Findings:

Development of information and knowledge on the phenology of the major mangrove species in the Sundarbans required for proper seed collection time and plantation establishment as well as change on the phenological behaviour in relation to change in ecological factors as well as climatic factors in the Sundarbans. Salinity zones also play a great role for bearing flowers and fruits in different zones of the Sundarbans. Even flowering and fruiting also vary year to year. Good seed year of major mangrove species recurrence after one year interval.
