Fuel Consumption and Seedling Tray Requirement in Commercial Mechanical Transplanting

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This participatory research work was done with Syngenta under public private partnership approach during aman 2014 season in Natore district. BRRI provided one 6-row riding type transplanter and two walk behind mechanical transplanter on rental basis. Transplanting operation was done in 42.55 ha area in 375 number of plots and 205 farmers were benefited by using BRRI supplied transplanter. Fuel consumption of 6-row riding type transplanter obtained 2.44 litre per bigha. Missing hill found 2%. About 6% tray required in pocket area filling by manual labour due to irregular shape of the plot. Almost 52% times spent in plot to plot movement and idle time. Among the transplanting plots, 70% are uniform, 25% are irregular and 5% were mostly irregular. Seedling tray requirement obtained 24 trays per bigha in aman season. Two skilled operators were developed during this season.

Objectives:

To reduce the tray requirement of mechanical transplanter
To provide service to the farmers for mechanized transplanting
To identify the constraints of commercial service of mechanical transplanting

Methodology:

The study was conducted during aman 14 season in Hatgobindapur, Chandpur, Natore. One 6-row riding transplanter (supplied by BRRI) was used to carry out this research. 6-row riding type transplanter machine has nine seedling density setting, three depth control and four space setting options. The rice variety BRRI dhan49 and BINA dhan7 were grown in the study area. Questionnaire was prepared to collect day to day information. Data were collected from 149 plots. Data on seedling height, leaf number, seedling density per tray, plot size and shape, seedling spacing, seedling density per hill, missing hill, floating hill, damaged hill, fuel consumption, labour requirement for gap filling and other pocket area, machine movement time, water height and depth of puddled soil, number of tray required in each plot, daily area coverage of transplanting were collected during field study.

Achievement/Findings:

Tray requirement in each plot can be reduced by adjusting plant to plant space and seedling density setting. Seedling density setting depended on seedling density in tray. Various factors affected the field capacity i.e. plot size and shape, land preparation, land leveling, water height, plot to plot distance etc. Standby mechanic is very much important to overcome sudden breakdown of machinery.
