Field Performance Evaluation of DAEdong Combine Harvester Under Public Private Partnership Approach

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried under public private partnership approach. One DAEDONG combine harvester was given to the local NGO named SOJAG, Dhamrai, Dhaka to provide rental service to farmers for harvesting rice in boro 14 season. Fuel consumption of the combine harvester obtained 40 liter per hectare and field capacity obtained 0.18 hectare per hour. Field efficiency increased with the increase of the length of land due to reduce turning loss. Area coverage varied depending on the plot to plot distance, plot size and shape. Number of plots under harvesting activity also influenced the area coverage of the harvester. Smaller plot size should be avoided to increase the daily area coverage of the harvester. Rental charge of machine should be offered more than Tk 35 per decimal for viability of business.

Objectives:

To estimate the fuel consumption of DAEDONG combine harvester.
To find out the actual field capacity of combine harvester
To compare the cost harvesting between manual and combine harvesting.

Methodology:

This was conducted in different villages under Dhamrai upazilla of Dhaka district. BRRI provided one DAEDONG combine harvester to the local NGO named SOJAG, Dhamrai, Dhaka to provide rental service to farmers for harvesting rice in boro 14 season. Combine harvester was operated in 9 villages under Dhamrai upazilla. Land size was categorized as small land having 15 decimal, medium land having 16 to 30 decimal and big land having more than 31decimal. Field capacity of combine harvester was calculated by dividing the area harvested and time required to harvest the crop. Data on land size and shape, straw height, turning time, operation time, forward speed, no. of labor required, fuel consumption, problems faced during operation were collected to evaluate the performance of combine harvester. Data were collected from 30 plots. Cost of mechanical harvesting was compared with manual harvesting.

Achievement/Findings:

Combine harvester reduced time, cost of harvesting, and drudgery of the farmers. Field capacity increased with the increase of land size. Rental service of combine harvester appeared as business viable model.
