Improvement of Air-blow Engelburg Huller

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An improved air blowing type rice mill was design and fabricated in the FMPHT research laboratory with the assistance of Korean milling expert for use in commercial purpose. A 15 kW electric motor and 8 number huller was used to fabricate the mill. The capacity of the modified air blowing type mill was 250-300 kg/hr which is two to three times the capacity of the small air blowing type rice mill. Milling yield, head rice and broken rice was found 66%, 63% and 2%, respectively. Farmers and millers both will be benefited by getting extra 1.0% rice than traditional engelburg huller.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The modification of the small air blow type rice mill was done in the research workshop of the Farm Machinery and Postharvest Technology Division to use the machine in commercial purpose. Korean milling machinery expert Prof. Dr. HW Hwang assisted to evaluate the performance of milling unit.

Design consideration: Design and fabrication was done in FMPHT divisional research workshop. During design, the following criteria were collected:

For commercial purpose use
Easy and simple of operation and maintenance
Locally available materials should be used to minimize the fabrication cost
Improvement the Capacity of milling and head rice recovery that should be accepted by the users

Performance test of huller: Milling performance of the modified air blowing type rice mill was tested in the FMPHT research laboratory.

Milling recovery: Using the Abrasive Whitener, mill the de-hulled samples. Calculate milling recovery by dividing the weight of milled rice recovered by the weight of the paddy sample. Broken grain: Using the Grain Grader, separate the broken grain from the whole grains. Calculated the percentage of the head rice and broken grains.

Achievement/Findings:

Major change in modified air blow type mill: Improvement works was done on the previously developed small air blow rice mill. One unit of modified air blow type engelburg huller was fabricated the FMPHT laboratory. The following major changes were done in the modified air blowing type rice mill--

Motor power increased to 15 kW
8 no. huller used to increase milling capacity
Use of 60 thw screen then to 75 thw screen for more milling yield
Blower pulley changed to 250 mm to 279.4mm for more suction air.
Blower fan revolution increased 3788-4462 rpm
Different pieces of weight were added to control delivery and no need to press by finger.

Blower attachment was changed
Cyclone separator was added to collect the husk, bran and small broken mixture

Modified air blowing type (one-pass) mill saves time and produce quality of milled rice than traditional engelburg rice mills. Modified air blowing types mill capacity was found 250 to 300 kg/hr which is 2 to 3 times more capacity than small air blowing rice mill. Farmers and millers both will be benefited by getting extra 1.0% rice than traditional engelburg huller.
