Problem Identification of Commercial Mechanical Rice Transplanting

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Seedling growth (height and leaf) was not sufficient due to severe cold. Average seedling height was 6-8 cm (BRRI dhan29 and BR16). Most of the seedlings were buried due to smaller height of seedling. Root was not grown sufficiently to make bonding. Bonding strength of seedling mat was very low and unable to create sufficient strength to roll the seedling. Therefore, the space requirement was higher to transport seedling in tray.Most of the plots were scattered. Seedlings were carried from nursery plot in truck by using carrier. One carrier can carry 100 trays. It increased the transportation cost. Lost time increased due to movement of the machine from one plot to another. Plot shape was not uniform (zigzag). land was not leveled uniformly. Some lands were smaller in size. Headland turning took more time. Plot to plot distance was far. It reduced the daily area coverage of transplanting. Machine should be loaded/unloaded from truck through slipper to avoid accidental damage of any parts of the transplanter. The major drawback of mechanization is the lack of accessibility of farm machine in the field. Cropping sequence was not uniform. It was very difficult to move machine in the inner plot.

Objectives:

To identify the problems of mechanical transplanting in boro season
To explore the probable solution of commercial transplanting

Methodology:

This study was conducted in three places in Trimphoni, Nandigram and Pathanpara, Joypurhat. Two models (DUO60 and S3-680) of 6-row riding type mechanical transplanters were operted in those areas. The variety BRRI dhan29, minicate and BR16 were grown in those areas. The 6-row ride-on transplanter (model S3-680) was operated in 10 farmer’s plots. The another 6-row ride-on transplanter (model DUO66) was operated in 14 farmers’ plot.. Problems on seedlings growth/establishment, movement of machine, seedling transportation, land geometry, plot to plot distance, location, machine loading and unloading and machine Accessibility were recorded during field operation.

identify machinery trouble
Land size and shape is very much important for proper operation of the machine.
Some lands are very small

Achievement/Findings:

Seedling density depends on germination of the variety. 140 gm dry seeds with good germination can be used in each tray for optimum seedling density. More than 90% seed germination should be ensured before seeding in tray. Before transplanting operation, seedling height, no. of leaf, root development and root bonding should be sufficient. Leaf number is not only one indicator to transplant seedling by mechanical transplanter. Seedling height and proper root development are the prime indicator to transplant seedling by mechanical transplanter. Different variety responds differently in root development and seedling height. In some variety, roots and plant growth slowly. Especially BRRI dhan29 needed at least 30 days to develop root and plant height suitable for mechanical transplanter. Plant spacing should be set to 16-19 cm depending soil and seedling condition. Trained operator is needed to operate the machine.Operator should calibrate the machine interms of soil condition, soil type, seedling height, seedling density, actual seedling spacing and number of seedling dispensed in each stroke. Operators should know the technique to operate the machine in the headland. Operator should operate the machine in lengthwise of the plot to reduce the headland turning.
