Estimates of Genetic Parameters,character Association and Path Analysis in Lablab Bean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Genetic parameters, character association and path coefficients were studied in eleven genotypes of lablab bean. Highest genotypic as well as phenotypic coefficients of variation were found for 10-pod weight followed by pod length, number of flowers/inflorescence and number of pods/inflorescence. The estimates of high heritability along with high genetic advance were found for number of flowers/inflorescence, number of pods/inflorescence, pod length, 10-pod weight and pod yield/plant. Number of flowers/inflorescence and number of pods/inflorescence showed highly significant positive correlation with pod yield/plant both at genotypic and phenotypic levels. Maximum direct contribution towards pod yield/plant was evident through number of flowers/inflorescence. Number of pods/inflorescence had positive high indirect effect to pod yield/plant through number of flowers/inflorescence. Therefore, plant selection should be based on more number of flowers that producing more number of pods for increasing pod yield in lablab bean.

Objectives:

To find out the genetic variability, interrelationships among different characters and the direct and indirect contributions of these characters towards yield.

Methodology:

Eleven genotypes of lablab bean were grown at the experimental farm of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh during August, 1996- January, 1997. The experiment was laid out in a RCBD was four replications following a spacing 2 m both between rows and within rows. Seeds were sown directly in pits. Intercultural operations were done as and when required.Data were recorded on days to flowering, days to pod setting, number of inflorescence/plant, number of flowering/ inflorescence, number of pods/inflorescence, pod length (em), pod width (em) number of seeds/pod, 10-pod weight (g) and pod yield/plant (kg.) In all four plants for each of genotype were used for data recording. Genotypic ( 2 g) and phenotypic ( 2 ph) variance were calculated. Broad sense heritability (h²) Genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation (GCV and PCV) were worked out. The path coefficients were calculated. Genotypic correlation coefficients were used to compute the path analysis.
