Genotype X Location Interaction and Stability of Some Bread Wheat Genotypes for Yield and Thousand Grain Weight

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Fourteen bread wheat genotypes were evaluated in four different environmental locations viz. Dinajpur, Joydebpur, Jessore and Jamalpur in 1997-1998 to study their genotype x location interaction and stability for grain yield and 1000 grain weights (TGW). Significant differences were observed for genotypes, locations and genotype x location Interaction. Dinajpur location was the most favorable one for grain yield and TGW, whereas, Jessore location was the most unfavorable one. Based on phenotypic indices (pi), regression coefficient (bi) and deviation form regression (s²di); Kanchan and BAW 904 were found most stable and desirable genotypes; the highest yielder BAW 936 and BAW 926 were suitable for better environment and BAW 918 for poor environment. In respect of AGW, Kanchan, BAW 898, BAW .921 and BAW 919 were found most desirable and stable; BAW 918 was suitable for better environment; BAW 936 and BAW 917 were suitable for poor environment. There was a negative relationship between better mean performance and stability.

Objectives:

To evaluate the yield and 1000 grain weight of fourteen promising bread wheat genotypes.
To determine their interaction and adaptation in different environmental locations of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Fourteen bread wheat advance genotypes of Wheat Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Nashipur, Dinajpur viz., BAW 898, BAW 935, BAW 936, BAW 920, BAW 921, BAW 923, BAW 926, BAW 928, BAW 933, BAW 904, BAW 917, BAW 918, BAW 919 including Kanchan as a cheek variety were evaluated at four different locations; Dinajpur, Joydebpur, Jessore and Jamalpur during 1997-98. The experiments were laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replications in all the locations. The seeds of each genotype were solid seeded on 251 November, 1997 in 5m long 8 row plots with a row spacing of 20cm in each location. The experiments were surrounded by border rows. Fertilization, irrigation and other management practices were done as par recommendation for the crop. Middle six rows excluding 50 em from each side of the plot were harvested for recording yield and 1000 grain weights. Thousand grain weights (g) were estimated by weighing randomly sampled 1000 seeds. Regression analysis of means of individual genotypes on environmental indices and stability parameters were estimated according to Eberhart and Russell (1966). Graphical presentations of the performance of the genotypes in different environments were done according to Dabholkar (1992).

Achievement/Findings:

The combined analysis of variance revealed that there was significant variation among the genotypes for grain yield and 1000 grain weight. Highly significant mean sum of squares due to location for 1000 grain weight (TGW) and yield showed distinct differences among the locations and their considerable influence on these traits. The genotypes x location interaction was significant for both the characters studied. Dinajpur location had the highest mean yield followed by Jamalpur, Joydebpur and Jessore. This meant that the environment of Dinajpur was the most favorable one and the majority of the genotypes had capacity to exploit that environment to confer the highest yield. BAW 936 gave the highest yield followed by BAW 935, check variety Kanchan, BAW 904, BAW 918 a·nd BAW 926. But they did not perform well in all the locations. Analysis of the stability parameters of the individual genotypes indicated that none of the genotypes showed combined bi and s ²di sensitivity suggesting either linear or non linear component alone or their cumulative effects were responsible of significant genotype x location interaction.
