Studies on Leaf Blight Severity of Wheat Under Field Condition and Its Effect on Grain Formation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Altogether 95 wheat materials (32 germplasm, 13 F₁ genotypes and 11 F₂genotypes) were studied under field condition for evaluating leaf blight (Bipolaris sookiniana) severity and its effect on grain formation. The wheat materials differed significantly from one to another in respect of leaf blight severity. But LAD was found to be higher at milk ripening than at flowering stage. Maximum LAD (19.13%) was recorded in AD-215 and lowest in DSN-138 (0.64%). LAD at flowering stage was recorded to be significantly correlated with LAD at milk ripening stage. Moreover, the existence of significantly negative correlation was found In respect of formation of healthy grains with the formation of black pointed as well as discoloured grains.

Objectives:

To determine the leaf blight severity of different wheat varieties/ germplasm/genotype and its effect on grain formation under field condition.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out in the field laboratory, Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh under natural field condition from November, 1996 to March, 1997 with 56 wheat materials. The materials were collected from Wheat Breeding Project, Dept. of Genetics and Plant Breeding, BAU, Mymensingh. The unit plot size was 2.5 m x 1 m and the experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Urea, TSP, MP and Cowdung were applied at.the rate of 200 kg/ha, 200 kg/ha, 80 kg/ha and 30 t/ha, respectively. Seeds were sown in the field on 24th November, 1996 at the rate of 120 kg/ha. Twenty plants of each unit plot were randomly selected for recording leaf blight severity. The leaf blight severity in terms of percent leaf area diseased (LAD) was recorded on the flag leaf and penultimate leaf of the plans at 50% flowering and milk ripening stages. Weight of grains (g)/plant, number of apparently healthy and black pointed grains were counted.

Achievement/Findings:

The studied materials were almost free from leaf blight up to flag leaf stage. Germplasm and F₁ genotypes showed significant variation of leaf area diseased (LAD) among themselves at flowering stage. But F₂ genotypes did not show significant variation among themselves though the leaf blight severity ranged from 0.00% to 0.65% at flowering stage. LAD for germplasm ranged from 0.00% to 2.63% where the highest counts were recorded. But D-7, D-27, D-38, D-39, D-62 and Almass were free from the disease. LAD of F₁ genotypes ranged from 0.00% to 3.99%, where the highest and lowest counts were recorded in KAN x BW-115 (47) and KAN x BW-115 (62), respectively. The genotypes varied significantly from one to another at milk ripening stage. At milk ripening stage, LAD for germplasm ranged from 0.64% to 19.13%. The lowest and the highest LAD were recorded in DSN-138 and in AD-215, respectively.Correlation co-efficient on leaf blight severity at flowering and milk ripening stages with grain weight/plant, formation of healthy and black pointed grains were studied. Leaf blight severity at flowering stage significantly correlated with milk ripening stage (0.966**). Significantly negative correlation in respect of formation of black pointed as well as discoloured grains versus formation of healthy grains was recorded (0.965**). Under the present study, significant correlation between leaf blight severity with plant height was not recorded. From the findings of the present study, it is clear that there is a relationship with the increase of leaf blight severity from one growth stage to another and even on the ear infection in terms of formation of healthy and diseased grains. It reveals that higher the formation of black pointed grains as well as discoloured grains lower will be the formation of healthy grains.
