Development and Maintenance of a Mangrove Museum

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Establishment of a mangrove museum is very much essential for preservation and demonstration of the flora and faunal specimens of the Sundarbans for the students, researchers and general people of the country which will create awareness and will help to protect and preserve the Sundarbans ecosystem. Museum room was renovated. One digital camera, two iron racks, one multipurpose almirah, 5 display boards, two wooden plant press, 20 glass containers were decorated. Films were purchased. Twelve wood samples of mangrove tree species were prepared. Thirty floral specimens (propagules, fruits) and 50 fish specimens were collected and preserved in the museum. Fifteen herbarium specimens of mangrove species have been prepared. One documentary film of Sundarbans was prepared and 200 still pictures were printed. One number of tiger hide and one piece of deer hide were reprocessed and stuffed as well as demonstrated in the Mangrove museum.

Methodology:

It was established a mangrove museum since July 2001 and the study will be continued and updated at the Head Quarter Museum of the Mangrove Silviculture Division to demonstrate the forest specimens for the students, teachers, researchers and visitors. It was purchased of different types of containers, preservatives and other materials for preservation of specimens. The collected specimens were identified for exhibition.

Achievement/Findings:

Improvement of Knowledge on the morphological, taxonomical, phenological and ecological features of the flora and fauna of the Sundarbans have been demonstrated and displayed in the museum at MSD Head Quarter, Khulna. As a result the research image has been increased of the Mangrove Silviculture Division of the BFRI among the interested visitors, students, researchers and foreigners.A unique Mangrove museum has been developed at the Mangrove Bhaban, Bangladesh Forest research Institute, Head Quarter, Muzgunni, Khulna.
