Diversities and Centralization of Mangrove Species Through Establishment of Arboretum in the Sundarbans

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Conservation and management of floral and faunal resources for millennium development and sustainable production of the forests. Establishment of arboretum is very much essential for conservation of genetic resources and to study taxonomy, ecology, silviculture, genetic diversity etc. of all mangrove species available in the Sundarbans.Three conservation plots covering an area of sixty hectares were established at Dhangmari (Com. No. 31), Bogi (Com. No. 24) and Munshiganj (Com. No. 46) in three salinity zones of the Sundarban. Initially it was recorded that there are thirty seven species at Bogi in the less saline zone, thirty one species at Dhangmari in the moderate saline zone and twenty two species at Munshigang in the strong saline zone of the conservation plots. Dhundhul (1.5 ha), kirpa (1.8 ha), passur (0.9 ha), jhana (0.6 ha), khalshi (0.9 ha), Bakul Kankra (0.9 ha), shingra (0.9 ha) and Maricha Baen (0.9 ha) species were centralized in three conservation plots in different saline zones. Growth and survival of those planted species in the conservation plots in different years have been recorded and maintained.

Objectives:

To conserve mangrove species in their natural habitat.
To centralize threatened mangrove species.
To observe the flora-fauna interaction over time.
To demonstrate flora and fauna in natural habitat in the Sundarbans.

Methodology:

There were selected three sites such as Bogi, Dhangmary and Munshiganj for gene conservation with threatened mangrove species through establishment of arboretum since July 2006, 60 ha. land acquisition from Forest Department was conducted initially.Three conservation plots covering an area of sixty hectares were established at Dhangmari (Com. No. 31), Bogi (Com. No. 24) and Munshiganj (Com. No. 46) in three salinity zones of the Sundarban. Land demarcation, clearing, metrological and ecological data collection, etc and raising seedling for plantation with mangrove species were done perfectly. It was surveying existing plant resources in the arboretum by establishing Temporary Sample plots(TSPs) and fitting-fixing name plates. Raising nursery with mangrove species and plantations were established duly and data collected twice a year.

Achievement/Findings:

Three conservation plots covering an area of sixty hectares were established at Dhangmari (Com. No. 31), Bogi (Com. No. 24) and Munshiganj (Com. No. 46) in three salinity zones of the Sundarbans.Previously raised experimental plantations of kirpa (1.8 ha), passur (0.9 ha), jhana (0.6 ha), khalshi (1.8 ha), amur (1.8 ha) bakul kankra(0.9 ha), amdhekur( 0.9ha) and Marichabaen(0.9 ha). Bhatkathi (Rhizophora apiculata), Kankra (Bruguiera gymnorhiza), Goran and Dhundul (Xylocarpus granatum) were maintained.
