Investigation on the Unused Part of Harvested Golpata (nypa Fruticans) from the Sundarbans.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Nypa fruticans is an economically important mangrove species in the Sundarbans. A huge amount of golpata leaves are harvested annually. At the time of harvesting the unused part of leaves are left in the Sundarbans. That is why the better utilization and management with the unused part of harvested golpata are to be determined. The activities were done in the laboratory from the collected different golpata leaves in the SRDI laboratory, Dhaka. The materials were collected from three salinity zones of the Sundarbans.Length of leaves differ from zone to zone. In Fresh Water zone average length of leaves is 3.01m., in moderate salinity water zone 2.86m and in strong salinity water zone 2.20m. Water salinity also vary from zone to zone. The measured water salinity in these zones are 3,12 and 23ppt respectively.

Objectives:

To explore the remaining part of harvested golpata for better utilization and management

Methodology:

Field visit and survey of golpata extraction areas were made in the Sundarbans. Collection of materials (remaining part of harvested golpata) for lab analysis.Data were collated and reported. The collected leaves, parts of the golpata and other parameters were tested in the laboratory. The analysis were done in the laboratory from the collected different golpata leaves in the SRDI laboratory, Dhaka.

Achievement/Findings:

The left portion of golpata leaves are not economically profitable. Determination of better utilization and management with the remaining part of harvested golpata is not environmentally recognized. So the left portion of golpata leaves should remain in its homestead and near by the muddy river. Leaves of used and unused golpata in the fresh water zone is fruitful and more economic.
