Farming Systems Research and Its Role in Improving the Lives of Resource Poor Farmers of a Village of Kishoreganj District in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The role of Farming System Research (FSR) carriedout by the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) since 1984-85 in improvement the lives of resource poor farmers of a typical haor village Noagaon under Karimganj thana of Kishoreganj district has been focused in this paper. The main parameters considered were farm production and income earned from different enterprises. During this ten years period of 1985-95, intervention was made on various aspects of farming to improve the management and productivity of the available resources as well as the same time new enterprises and technologies were introduced. Within the farmers' limited resources, income generating activities such as introduction of diversified crops with modern varieties of rice, other crops and improved breeds of chicken and duck, improved management of existing livestock and improved methods of fish catching. Here introduced during the project period. As a result, farm income of the participated farmers increased significantly in successive years. Farmers' attitude and their level of knowledge has changed tremendously over time. FSR has significant impact on small farming that resulted increase in farm income, improved the quality and standard of living of resource poor and also ecologically less privileged farmers.

Objectives:

To examine the changes of farm production and income and non-farm activities of resource poor farmers at FSR site with a view to examining farm production and income earned from different enterprises as well as to document the infrastructure and other socioeconomic development specifically due to FSR intervention specifically.

Methodology:

A detailed survey was conducted at Noagaon in 1985-86 covering the whole population. Through this survey production potentials and resources to the farmers were identified as well as problems and constraints of production were prioritized. These discussed with the farmers. extension workers, multi-disciplinary research team and task force of FSRDP for designing the trials or experiments. An evaluation was made through statistical and economic analysis after completion of trials/experiments in each year. Monitoring of farmers' resources. adoption of technologies, cropping patterns and productions were conducted at Noagaon simultaneously in each year. After ten years of intervention on farming community; data on cropping patterns, crop of different varieties cultivated, rearing of livestock and poultry birds and fish production were complied and analyzed for determining the impact of FSR in this village.

The intervention was made in various aspects of farming viz., introduction of diversified crops with modern varieties, improvement of existing crop management practices (variety, fertilizer, irrigation, organic matter), introduction of improved breeds of chicken and duck in the farmers ' condition, improved management of existing livestock, routine vaccination of poultry birds, raising young bulls for beef purpose, goat rearing and improved gear for fishing, altogether improved the production status of various farm enterprises.The increase in meat, milk, eggs, animal and fish production were observed along with crop production. The data on annual gross income ha•1 as well as per farm basis indicate that the gross income ha"1 for some major crops was Tk. 66,822 in 1985-86 which increased to Tk. 259352 in 1994-95 (Table 3). Some minor crops, pulses and vegetables were introduced which increased the farm income more than 51 times. Due to reduction of the number of cattle and goat, gross income per farm decreased but the income from chicken, ducks eggs and dairy products increased considerably in 1994-95 and in other successive years. Income from fishing also increased by 119%. During the intervention period, farm and non-farm activities increased and accordingly rate of employment increased from 74% in 1985-86 to 95% in 1994-95.After adopting the new technologies and with the introduction of improved management practices, production of crops, poultry birds and fish increased substantially in FSR site more particularly at Noagoan area. FSR has contributed much to small farming that resulted increase in farm income as well as improved the standard to living of resource poor and also the ecologically less privileged farmers. Therefore, extension of FSR activities in other areas may be helpful for up liftment of the rural people of Bangladesh.
