Effect of Seed Rates and Levels of Npk Fertilizer on Growth, Development and Yield of Foxtail Millet (setaria Ltalica)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To evaluate the effect of seed rate and NPK level on growth, development and yield of foxtail millet (Setaria italica L. Beauv.), a field experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from December 1997 to May 1998. Four seed rates e.g. 5,7,9 and 11 kg ha-l, and five NPK levels e.g. N_oP_oK_o, N_2oP₁₅K₁₅, N_4oP_3oK₃₀, N_6oP₄₅K₄₅, N_8oP_6oK_6o kg ha^-1 were used in the study. Growth parameters, like plant height, total tillers plant^-1, LDM, SDM, EDM, TOM and CGR decreased with increasing seed rate, but increased with increasing NPK levels significantly. The LAI and LAD increased with both Increasing seed rate and NPK level. At harvest, plant height, total tillers plant-1, effective tillers plant^-1, panicle length, grain panicle^-1 and harvest Index decreased with increasing NPK level. Plant population m^-2, grain yield, straw yield and biological yield increased with both of increasing seed rate and NPK levels. Grain yield Increased gradually with the increasing seed rate upto 9 kg ha^-1 and declined thereafter. But the highest grain yield (2.12 t ha^-1 was obtained from 9 kg seed ha ^-1. NPK level showed almost similar trend regarding grain yield.

Objectives:

To determine the optimum seed rate and NPK fertilizer for growth and development and maximum yield of foxtail millet.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from 15 December 1997 to 25 May 1998. The soil of the experimental site was silty loam in texture having pH 6.5, total N 0.08%, organic carbon 0.86%, available P 10 ppm, exchangeable k 0.26 me%, S 15 ppm and Zn 2.5 ppm. The soil was moderately acidic in nature, its cation exchange capacity was medium and the general fertility status was low. Four seed rates viz., 5, 7, 9 and 11 kg ha^-1 and five NPK levels viz., N0 P0K0, - N2oP15K15. N4oP3oK3o, N6oP45K45, N8oP6oK6o kg ha^-1 were included in a split-plot design assigning seed rate in the main plots and NPK levels in sub-plots at random with three replications and unit plot size was 5m x 4m. The land was well prepared. The entire amount of TSP, MP and one-third of urea were applied at the time of final land preparation. The rest of urea was applied in two equal splits on 20 and 40 days after emergence. The seeds of foxtail millet were continuously sown at the rate of 5, 7, 9 or 11 kg ha^-1 as per treatment schedule. All post-sowing operations were done as and when required. Data for yield and yield contributing characters were recorded Data were analyzed and the mean differences were compared with Duncan's Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

From the re.sults obtained, it may be concluded that foxtail millet may be cultivated with the seed rate 9 kg ha^-1 and fertilizer level N₆₀P₄₅K₄₅ kg ha^-1 for optimum growth hand development and maximum yield.
