Performance of Separated Tillers of Transplant Aman Rice at Various Management Practices

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from June to December 1999 to study the performance of separated tillers of transplant aman rice (cv. BR23) at various management practices Three row arrangements viz., single, double and triple rows and five nitrogen rates viz., 0, 40, 60, 80 and 100 kg ha^-1 were included in the study. Plant height, number of total tillers hilr 1 , number of productive tillers hilr ' , number of non-bearing tillers hilr1 and number of grains panicle•' were highest in single row arrangement. Grain and straw yields Vl(ere highest in double row arrangement. All the crop characters increased with the increasing rate of nitrogen except number of non-bearing tillers hilr1 . Grain and straw yields were highest at 100 kg N ha^-1which maintained similarity with 80 kg ha•'. The highest grain yield was found in double row arrangement with 100 kg N ha^-1 which was similar to that of double row arrangement with 80 kg N / ha .

Objectives:

To delineate the effect of row arrangement and nitrogen rate on the yield and yield components of separated tillers of transplant aman rice.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the aman season from June to December 1999. The soil of experimental field was silt loam with pH 6.67. Contents of organic matter, total N,available P and exchangeable K were 1.85%, 0.10%, 10 ppm, 0.102 me/100 g soil, respectively. Three row arrangements viz., single, double and triple rows and five nitrogen rates viz., 0, 40, 60, 80 and 100 kg ha·1 applied as urea were included in the experiment. The row arrangements used in the experiment are shown in Fig. 1. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design assigning row arrangement in the main plot and nitrogen rate in the sub plot. Area of each unit plot was 4.0 m x 2.5 m, BR23 (Dishari), a HYV of transplant aman rice, was used as the test crop in the experiment. The land was thoroughly ploughed with a tractor driven disc plough followed by harrowing. The land was puddled by ploughing and cross ploughing two times with country plough followed by laddering in order to level the soil. Weeds and stubble were removed from the field. Triple superphosphate, muriate of potash,gypsum and zinc sulphate were applied at the rate of 125, 70, 60 and 10 kg ha·1 ,respectively. The entire amount of all the fertilizers except urea were applied to the soil at final land preparation. The whole amount of urea was applied as top dressing in three equal splits at 15 days after transplanting (OAT), 30 OAT and 45 OAT. Thirty five day old seedlings were transplanted on 31 July 1999 with three seedlings hill at a spacing of 25 em x 15 em.
