Probability Analysis of Rainfall Requirement of Rice, Wheat and Potato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The major meteorological data like temperature, relative humidity, rainfall, wind speed and sunshine hour for a period of 21 years (1975-1995). In Mymensingh region were collected and analyzed. This was done for planning of irrigation strategy and to develop an appropriate irrigation scheduling for different cropping systems. Probability analysis, evapotranspiration and net irrigation requirement were estimated by the formulae presented by Weibull (1939), Blaney-Criddle (1950) and Doorenbos and Pruitt (1977), respectively. For recurrence interval of 2,5,25,50 and 100 years, the values of maximum rainfall found In June were 470, 660, 790, 910, 982 and 104 mm, respectively. The highest PET (6.49 mrn day-1 was obtained in April and the lowest (3.68 mm day-1 in July. The maximum net Irrigation requirements for Aus, T. Aman rice ,Bore rice, wheat and Potato were found In the months of April, November, February, January and January, respectively.

Objectives:

To save irrigation water by using effective rainfall for rice, wheat and potato

Methodology:

The major meteorological data like rainfall, temperature, relative humidity, sunshine hour and wind speed were collected from the weather Yard of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh (24°461 N latitude and 90°561 Elongitude). Daily data were collected from a period of twenty one years (1975-1995) and reduced to mean monthly values. The most commonly used Weibull (1939) formula was used for probability analysis. Data were arranged in descending order of magnitudes, starting from the highest values .The values of return period, T, were computed from the corresponding rainfall data. Evapotrnspiration was estimated following Blaney Criddle (1950) method. This method was stated as most suitable and accurate among the eleven methods compared by Talukder and Ali (1988). The net irrigation requirement was calculated using the field water balance equation (Doorenbos and Pruitt, 1977).

Achievement/Findings:

It was observed that irrigation was needed at the first month of Aus rice. At later stages no irrigation is necessary rather there was surplus rain water. Supplemental irrigation was required at the later stage of T. Aman rice and irrigation should be ensured in he last two months. Boro rice required irrigation of almost similar amount throughout the growing season but a little bit higher irrigation was needed in reproductive stage. Wheat and Potato required considerably less amount of irrigation water than Boro rice throughout the growing season although it was observed that at later stage irrigation requirement was higher for both the crops.
