The experiment was conducted both in the experimental field and in the laboratory of RARS, SARI, Hathazari, Chittagong during 1998-1999. The study was laid out with a view to evaluate the efficacy of different fungicides in controlling foot and root rot of French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) by seed treatment and their effects on yield. The test variety was SARI bush bean 1. The seed treating fungicides were Cupravit 50 WP @ 0.1, 0.2, 0.3%), Bavistin @ 0.1, 0.2, 0.3%), Topsin M 70 WP @ 0.1, 0.2, 0.3%) and Vitavax 200 @ 0.1, 0.2, 0.3%). Vitavax 200 (0.3%) and Bavistin (0.3%) showed the highest germination (%) in the field (63.12%) and secondly Bavistin (0.3%) with 60.84% over untreated control. The maximum yield (22.15 t/ha) was obtained from Vitavax 200 (0.3%).

The present study was undertaken to evaluate

(a) the effect of fungicides on germination in blotter and in field,

(b) the effect of fungicides in reduction of Foot and root rot in the field and

(c) the effect of fungicides on yield and yield contributing characters.

The experiment was conducted both at the laboratory and at the experimental field of Regional Agricultural Research Station, SARI, Hathazari, Chittagong during 1998-99. In the laboratory, only germination of the treated seeds was recorded through blotter method. The test variety of French bean was SARI bush bean 1. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block design with 13 treatments (including control) following 3 (three) replications. Seeds were treated with different fungicides by dry treatment. The seed treating fungicides were Cupravit 50 WP (Copper Oxichloride), Bavistin (Carbendazim), Topsin M 70 WP (Thiophanate-methyle) and Vitavax 200 (Carboxin) each with at the rate of 0.1%, 0.2% and 0.3%, respectively. For foot and root rot experiment, the crop was sown on 6 November, maintaining 30 em x 15 em spacing. Cowdung, Urea, TSP and MP were applied at the rate of 10 t/ha, 50 kg/ha, 150 kg/ha and 150 kg/ha, respectively. The fertilizers were applied by the following methods : (i) half of cowdung was applied during land preparation, (ii) half of cowdung, the entire amount of TSP and half of each of urea and MP are applied during plot preparation, (iii) rest of urea and MP were applied as top dressing after 30 days. Three irrigations were applied and other cultural operations were done as and when needed. Data were recorded on germination percentage, percentage of Foot and root rot (plant mortality), percentage of plant survival, yield and yield contributing characters. The recorded data were statistically analyzed and comparisons among the individual treatments were processed by Duncan's New Multiple Rang Test (DMRT).

The results of the present investigation indicated that there was no effect of fungicides on germination in the blotter method but the effect was found in the field. As the pathogens are soil borne in nature, so the pathogens infected the seeds in the field and the rottage of the seeds were observed. Here, Vitavax 200 (0.3%}, Bavistin (0.3%), Cupravit 50 WP (0.3%) and Topsin M 70 WP (0.3%) were inhibited the seed rottage more in the field andincreased germination percentage. Thakur et a/. (1991) evaluated the . effect of systemic fungicides for controlling Foot and root rot under glasshouse condition. They found that Copper oxychloride (Cupravit) and Carbendazim (Bavistin) supported 98% germination. In the present study, the highest Foot and root rot (i.e. mortality) was shown by control treatment (38.43%). Chunje and Zhibiao (1996) repoq•Jhat Foot and root rot resulted 0- 90% mortality in the field. The study further indicated that the lowest Foot and root rot was found in Vitavax 200 (0.3%) and Bavistin (0.3%). These fungicides reduced Foot and root rot and increased Plant survival and Yield. Sharma and Sohi (1981) reported from field trials with 10 seed dressings fungicides against Foot and root rot, the best protection was given by Bavistin (Carbendazim) and Vitavax (Carboxin) and yield was increased by 10-13% and mortality was reduced from 56-14%. Geypens (1978) studied the effectiveness of some fungicides in controlling Foot and root rot of beans and stated that Carbendazim at 100 or 400 ppm and Thiophanate-methyle (Topsin M 70 WP) at 100 or 400 ppm were excellent in controlling the disease. Papavezas and Lewis (1975) evaluated seed treatment with fungicides on bean root rots and claimed that Carboxin, Thiophanate-methyle increased stand and reduced root rot. Zhang (1992) reported that seed treatment with 0.5% Bavistin provided effective disease (foot and root rot) control. In the present study, the highest yield was observed in Vitavax 200 (0.3%) which was followed by Bavistin (0.3%). Yield increased by using Vitavax 200 and Bavistin was reported by Sharma and Sohi (1981). The lowest yield was shown by control treatment. In control, no fungicides were used for seed treatment, hence, fungal activities were high, the consequence of which resulted poor germination and increased plant mortality. So, the yield was lowest compared to other fungicidal treatments. McFadden and Hall (1987) stated pathogens are suppressed to achieve yield increases. In the present study, it is concluded that Vitavax 200 (0.3%) and Bavistin (0.3%) increased germination (%), reduced Foot and root rot (plant mortality) and significantly increased yield, therefore, these fungicides may be recommended to control Foot and root rot disease of French bean through seed treatment.
