Marketing of Boro Paddy by Farmers in Selected Areas of Mymensingh District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted to estimate marketable surplus and marketed surplus of Boro paddy for different size groups of farmers and their disposal pattern of Boro paddy in some selected areas of Phulpur upazila of Mymensingh district. The marketable surplus and marketed surplus of paddy were 67% and 47% of total production, respectively. Forty eight percent farmers sold their 65% paddy to Paikers at market places and the rest 35% at farm gate.

Objectives:

(i) To estimate marketable and marketed surplus of boro paddy of different groups of farmers,

(ii) To identify the marketing channel of boro paddy and

(iii) To examine the disposal pattern of boro paddy by farmers.

Methodology:

The location for the study was selected purposively which was at Phulpur of Mymensingh district. It is one of the leading boro producing area and has a large number of rice processing mills. The economy of this region is basically based on agriculture, as it is the main source of income and employment for the vast majority of people of this area. Two different sets of interview schedules were used for data collection.Grower information was collected from 5 selected villages named as Bitekandi, Shinhershar, Gosh gaon, Khila nd Bagunda. Besides growers, some paddy middlemen were also interviewed for necessary information. The growers and middlemen were purposively selected. Face to face interview method was followed during data collection. Mainly tabular and descriptive technique was applied for the analysis of data. The study was conducted at the boro season of 1999.

Achievement/Findings:

The study revealed that the medium farmers were found more efficient in respect of area under boro cultivation in the study area. Marketable surplus and marketed surplus were positively related to the farm size, which was 67% and 47% of total quantity of boro paddy produced. The study also revealed that for all types of farms marketed surplus was lower than marketable surplus. Frequency of sale was negatively related with the farm size but the volume of paddy per sale decreased with the reduction of farm size. Small farmers sold their highest portion of paddy to the Beparies at farm gate while the medium and large farmers sold mainly to the Paikers at market places.
