Agronomic Response of Late Transplanted Photosensitive Aman Rice (br22) to Different Levels of Nitrogen and Spacing

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to study the effect of different levels of nitrogen and plant spacing on leaf area index, nitrogen present in and uptake by grain and straw, nitrogen use efficiency, %N recovery, crop growth rate and net assimilation rate of a late transplanted photosensitive wet season aman rice var. BR 22. Five nitrogen levels @ 0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 kg/ha and three spacing viz. 20 em x 10 em, 25 em x 10 em and 25 em x 15 em were included as treatments. The application of N-fertilizer @ 120 kg/ha produced the highest significant leaf area index (LAI), total dry matter (TOM), nitrogen content in and uptake by grain and straw, grain yield and crop growth rate. Agronomic and physiological N use efficiency were the highest when 60 kg N/ha and 30 kg N/ha applied, respectively. Wider spacing produced higher LAI, TDM,% N in and uptake by grain and crop growth rate while closer spacing produced higher agronomic and physiological nitrogen use efficiency and grain yield.

Objectives:

Achievement/Findings:

Nitrogen per cent in grain and straw: Nitrogen percentage in both grain and straw was increased with the increase of N-supply. Maximum nitrogen percentage in grain (1.85) and in straw (0.89 %N) was found when 120 kg N/ha applied . Percentage of nitrogen was not significantly affected by spacing. Similar results were also reported . Nitrogen uptake in grain and straw: Nitrogen uptake in grain and straw significantly increased with increase of N-supply. The highest significant N-uptake in grain (72.0) and straw (49.22) were found when 120 kg N/ha applied. Similar results were found . Nitrogen uptake in grain and straw were not significantly affected by spacing . Agronomic and physiological nitrogen use efficiency: The highest agronomic efficiency (19.94) was found when 60 kg N/ha were applied and the lowest (14.32) when 120 kg N/ha applied. Physiological efficiency decreased with increase in N-supply. The highest significant physiological N use efficiency was 53.6 when 30 kg N/ha applied. Similar results were also found by BRRI .
