Studies on Growth and Yield of Some Indigenous Potato Varieties of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at the Horticulture Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from October 1992 to March 1993. Cold stored seeds of 11 indigenous potato varieties were used for the study in order to evaluate the growth and yield ability of the varieties. The varieties showed significant variation among themselves in vegetative growth, tuberization, period required for maturity, yield and grade of tubers. Among the varieties under study, Challisha, Lal Pakri and Shilbilati appeared to be relatively early, requiring 96 days for maturity. The verities Surjamukhi, Ausha, Shada Guti and Dohazari Lal demonstrated much higher yield, (23.4 to 30.4 t ha^-1) than the national average yield of potato (10.9 t ha^{- 1}).

Objectives:

To assess the growth habit and ability of some important indigenous potato varieties of Bangladesh for selection and recommendation of the better ones.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Farm, BAU , Mymensingh during the period from October, 1992 to March 1993. Eleven indigenous potato varieties were considered as the testing materials. The varieties were Ausha, Challisha, Dohazari Lal, Festa Shil, Hagrai, Lal Shil, Lal Pakri, Patnai, Shilbilati, Surjamukhi and Shada Guti. Seed tubers of the varieties produced at the BAU Horticulture Farm during the previous season (1991-92) and preserved in a cold store at Kishoreganj were used as planting materials. The experiment was set up in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The size of unit plot was 2.4 m x 3.0 m. Whole tubers (20-30 mm in size) were planted on 17 November, 1992 at a spacing of 60 cm x 15 cm. Manure and fertilizers in the form of cowdung, urea, triple superphosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MP), gypsum, zinc sulphate and borax were applied at the rate of 20 tonnes, 276, 185, 322, 75, 25 and 9 kg ha^-1, respectively. The entire amount of TSP, MP, gypsum, zinc sulphate and borax were applied in furrows made on both sides of the seed rows and mixed properly with soil immediately before planting. The remaining half of urea was applied after 40 days of planting. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The varieties were harvested during February 20, 1993 to march 10 ,1993 depending on maturity of the varieties, data on emergence, foliage coverage, number of main stems per hill, number and weight of tubers per hill, days to maturity, tuber yield and grades of tubes were recorded and analyszed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

The findings of the present study indicate that Surjamukhi was the highest tuber yielder among the varieties. It was also revealed from the present findings that the yield potential of Ausha, Shada Guti, Dohazari Lal and Patnai are also appreciably high. The tubers of the variety Surjamukhi looked like those of modern varieties, and possibly would have less market value compared to other popular indigenous varieties. Careful and systematic investigations leading to characterization of the important indigenous potato varieties and selection of the better ones are suggested.
