Host Preference of Pulse Beetle Callosobruchus Chinenesis L. to Different Legume Seeds

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted in the laboratory of the Department of Entomology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh in 1997 on the host preference of pulse beetle, Cal/osobruchus chinensis L. to different kinds of legumes seeds. Commonly grown legume seeds such as chickpea, lentil, blackgram, grass pea, pea, arhar, soybean, country bean and french bean were tested by no choice test from their suitability to C. chinensis. Adult female laid eggs on tested legumes seeds but their number varied. The best preferred group of legume seeds for oviposition and adult emergence were arhar, chickpea, mungbean and lentil. Seed weight loss was higher in lentil and lowest in french bean.

Objectives:

To evaluate the degree of susceptibility of major legume seeds grown in Bangladesh

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted to find out on the host preference of pulse beetle, Ca/losobruchus chinensis L. to different legume seeds in the laboratory of the Department of Entomology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh in 1997. Tested legume seeds: Ten different kinds of legume seeds were tested to study the host preference of pulse beetle. The legumes were : Chickpea (Cicer arietinum), Mungbean (Vigna radiata), Lentil (Lens culinaris), Blackgram (Vigna mungo), Grasspea (Lathyrus sativus), Pea (Pisum sativum), Arhar (Cajanus cajan), Soybean (Glycine max), Country bean (Oolichos lablab) and French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). Mass culture of pulse beetle: Adult pulse beetles were collected from the laboratory of the Department of Entomology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh and allowed to ovipositon mungbean in glass jar. Mungbean seeds along with eggs were left for adult emergence. Newly emerged adults were again allowed to ovipositon fresh mungbean seeds and the procedure continued to maintain a steady stock culture of the test insect. Host preference study: Host preference study of pulse to legume seeds was made by no choice test. Fifty gram uninfested seeds of each variety of legumes was taken in individual glass jar with three replications. Then 5 pair of newly emerged adult pulse beetle from stock culture was released in each glass jar. After 10 days, the insects were removed and three samples each of one gram seeds per replicate were taken randomly and carefully counted the eggs laid on the seed surface with the help of a magnifying glass. The glass jars were then stored under room conditions for adult emergence. The number of adults' emerged from each jar was recorded daily. The weight of seeds were taken again after the complete emergence of adults and the per cent weight loss was calculated by using the following formula: Percent weight loss = A-B A X 100 where, A = Initial weight B = Final weight.

Achievement/Findings:

The results indicated that the most preferred group of legume seeds for oviposition was arhar, chickpea mungbean and lentil and the least preferred group was grasspea, pea, blackgram, country bean and french bean. The resu.lts are more or less in agreement with the findings of Singh (1976) who reported that C. chinensis preferred oviposition to cowpea and arhar followed by chickpea, mungbean, lentil, grasspea, pea, blackgram, soybean and french bean in order of decreasing suitability. The results indicated marked influence of different legume seeds on the orientation of C. chinensis. The variations in influence on the orientation of the pulse beetle may be attriquted to the characteristics of the seeds in respect of seed coat colour or to the odour emanating from the seeds. Arhar, due to its bright brown colour, attracted highest number of pulse beetles while minimum number of pulse beetles were attracted to the blackgram, soybean and grasspea due to their dull colour. Maximum preference of dark brown colour of arhar to the beetles. Gupta and Sehgal (1987) also reported that the Callosobruchus spp. exhibited their preference for the colored lights in red, green, yellow, blue, white, sequences in respect of orientation.
