Effect of Varieties and Fertilizers on the Yield and Yield Components of Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from November 1990 to April 1991 to ascertain the effect of varieties and different fertilizers on the yield and yield components of wheat. The experiment consisted of two varieties of wheat viz., Kanchan and Balaka, and six fertilizer treatments viz., 0 (no fertilizer application = control), N, NP, NPK, NPKZn, and NPKZnS. Both Kanchan and Balaka varieties gave similar grain yield. The vegetative growth, yield components and yield of wheat were markedly improved due to balanced application of NPK fertilizers. Application of Zn and S fertilizers were found to be not essential for the growth and yield improvement of wheat under Bangladesh Agricultural University farm condition.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effect of different varieties and fertilizers on the yield and yield components of wheat.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University during November 1990 to April 1991. The land was medium high with sandy loam texture. The pH of the soil ranged from 6.6 to 6.9. The experimental soil contained on an average 0.05% N, 15 ppm P, 16.5 me/100 g K, 0.64% organic carbon, 2.5 ppm Zn and 15.7 ppm S. The average monthly rainfall ranged from 0.10 cm to 19.68 cm. The experiment consisted of two varieties of wheat, viz., Kanchan and Balaka, and six fertilizer treatments, viz., no fertilizer (control), N, NP, NPK, NPKZn, and NPKZnS. Rates of N, P₂0₅, K₂0, Zn and S were 80, 60, 40, 9 and 20 kg ha^-1, respectively. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block design with four replications. Size of each unit plot was 4.0mx 2.5m. Seeds were sown to a depth of 3 cm in 25 cm apart rows at the rate of 120 kg ha^-1 on 26 November 1990 in a well prepared land. The land was fertilized as per treatment specification. Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur and zinc were supplied through urea, triple superphosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate, respectively. The whole amount of triple superphosphate, muriate of potash, zinc sulphate and gypsum and one-third of urea were applied at final land preparation. Rest of urea was applied in two equal installments-one at five days of sowing and another at 20 days of sowing. The crop was weeded thrice-at 15, 30 and 45 days after sowing. Only one irrigation was applied after 45 days of sowing .No plant protection measures were taken as the crop was not infested with insect pests and diseases. Ten plant were randomly selected in each unit plot excluding border rows prior to harvest to record the data on yield components. Grain and straw yields were recorded from whole plot harvest which were then converted to hectare basis. Grains were sun dried for three days and the grain yield was adjusted to a 14% moisture content. Recorded data were analyzed using the "Analysis of Variance" technique and the mean differences were tested with Duncan's New Multiple Ranges Test .

Achievement/Findings:

It can be concluded that balanced application of NPK fertilizer was adequate to obtain maximum grain yield of wheat. Application of Zn and S fertilizers were not found to be essential for the production of wheat under Bangladesh Agricultural University farm conditions.
