Response of Late Transplant Aman Rice to Various Forms and Timing of Nitrogenous Fertilizer Application

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

: A field experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from August 1999 to December 1999 to study the effect of forms and timing of nitrogen fertilizer application on the performance of Binashail, a late variety of transplant aman rice. There were two factors: (i) two forms of nitrogen fertilizer-urea supergranule (USG) and prilled urea (PU) and (ii) seven timing of nitrogen fertilizer application, i.e. whole amount at transplanting, whole amount at 15 OAT, whole amount at 30 OAT, Y2 at transplanting +Y2 at 15 OAT,% at transplanting +Y2 at 30 OAT, Y2 at 15 OAT+% at 30 OAT and % at transplanting+ Y2 at 45 OAT. USG (1 g granule) was deep placed in the middle of four hills in alternate rows while PU was broadcast. The rate of nitrogen was 80 kg ha•1 . The results showed that USG was more efficient than PU regarding plant height, number of effective tillers hill"1 , panicle length, number of grains panicle.,, 1000 grain weight, grain yield, straw yield and biological yield. Plant height, number of effective tillers hill" 1 , panicle length, number of grains panicle., 1000 grain weight, grain yield and straw yield were found to be the highest with Y2 Nat 15 OAT+ Y2 Nat 30 OAT while values for the same parameters were found to be the lowest when whole amount of nitrogen was applied as a single dose at 15 or 30 OAT.

Objectives:

To find out the effect of different forms of nitrogen fertilizer and to observe the influence of timing of nitrogen fertilizer application on the growth parameters, yield components and yield of late transplant aman rice.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from August 1999 to December 1999. Binashail, a high yielding transplant aman rice variety was used as plant material. The variety was developed by the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) by inducing gamma ray on the popular photosensitive cultivar Nizershail and recommended by the National Seed Board in •1987. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Each block comprised 14 unit plots which were designed to assign two sources of nitrogen and 7 combinations of time of nitrogen application. Total number of unit plot was 42. Spaces between blocks and unit plots were 1 m and 0.75 m, respectively. The size of unit plot was 8 m2 (4 m x 2 m). The land was opened with a tractor drawn disc plough and then was puddled thoroughly by repeated ploughing and cross ploughing with a country plough followed by subsequent laddering for leveling. There were two factors: (i) two forms of nitrogen fertilizer i.e. urea supergranule (USG) and prilled urea (PU) and (ii) seven timing of nitrogen fertilizer application, i.e. whole amount at transplanting, whole amount at 15 OAT, whole amount at 30 OAT. % at transplanting + % at 15 OAT, % at transplanting + Y2 at 30 OAT, Y2 at 15 OAT + Y2 at 30 OAT and Y2 at transplanting + Y2 at 45 OAT. Nitrogenous fertilizer was applied @ 80 kg ha•1 . In addition to PU/USG a basal dose each of triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, zypsum and zinc sulphate @ 90, 30, 60 and 10 kg ha-1 , respectively were applied in each plot at the time of final land preparation (BINA, 1998). As per experimental specification, at the centre of four consecutive hills of two adjacent rows, one (equivalent to 40 kg N ha-1 ) or two (equivalent to 80 kg N ha- 1) marbles of urea supergranule was placed at a depth of 2-3 inches. Experimental plots were top dressed with PU as per experimental treatment. Thirty five day old seedlings were uprooted from the nursery bed very carefully. Four seedlings hilr 1 were planted on 20 September 1999 maintaining a hill spacing of 20 em. Weeding, gap filling, irrigation and other cultural operations were done as and when necessary in order to provide adequate conditions for proper growth and development of the crop. The crop was harvested at full maturity when 90% of the grain turned golden yellow in colour and all necessary data were recorded. The crop of individual plot was threshed by pedal thresher. Grains were sun dried to a moisture content of 15% and then weighed. Straw was also sun dried and weighed. Data recorded for different parameters were compiled and tabulated in proper form and mean differences among treatments were adjudged by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).
