Effect of Variety and Weeding Regime on the Yield and Yield Components of Boro Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm, Mymensingh during December 1998 to May 1999 to find out the effect of variety and weeding regime on the yield and yield components of boro rice. The treatments included four varieties of boro rice viz. lratom 24, Alok 6201, BRRI Dhan 29 and BR2, and three weeding regimes, viz. Application of Ronstar @ 2 I ha^-1, Weed free and No weeding. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The minimum weed growth was noticed with the tallest (104.39 cm) variety BR2 and the maximum with the dwarf (80.54 em) variety (lratom 24) throughout the growth period. Ronstar application was found to lower dry matter weight of weed in the rice plot. Significantly higher grain yields was obtained from Ronstar treatment and complete weed tree treatment which were 5.21 t ha^-1 and 5.09 t ha^-1, respectively. The lowest grain yield (4.84 t ha.') was recorded in no weeding condition. Among the four varieties, BRRI dhan29 produced the highest grain yield (5.43 t ha^-1) which was followed by Alok 6201 (5.22 t ha^-1). Alok 6201 produced the highest straw yield (5.99 t ha^-1) and it was followed by BRRI dhan29 (5.87 t ha^-1). lratom 24 produced the lowest grain yield (4.72 t ha^-1). The use of BRRI dhan 29 and Alok 6201 coupled with weed control by Ronstar might be the best option for better yield in boro rice.

Objectives:

To study the effect of variety and weeding regimes on the yield and yield components of boro rice.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm, Mymensingh during December 1998 to May 1999. The land was medium high with sandy loam structure. The experiment consisted of two factors (i) four rice varieties of boro rice, viz., lratom 24, Alok 6201, BRRI Dhan29, and BR2 and (ii) three weeding regimes, viz., Weed control by Ronstar @ 21 ha^-1, Weed free and no weeding. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The unit plot size was 4m x 2.5m. The experimental plot was fertilized with 100, 60, 40, 20 and 5 kg ha^-1 of N, P₂0₅, K₂0, S and Zn through urea, triple supper phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate, respectively. Forty-day old seedlings were transplanted on 27 January 1999 with two seedlings hill- 1 maintaining the spacing 25 cm x 15cm. In case of Alok 6201 the seedling age 30 days. Total amount of triple super phosphate, murate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate was applied at the time of final land preparation. The urea was top dressed in three equal splits at 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting. Weeding was done as and when necessary in weed free treatment. Ronstar was applied at the rate of 21 ha^-1 on 31 January 1999 (at five DAT). Sumithion was applied at the rate of 1.121 ha^-1 to control the infestation of stem borer at the booting stage of the rice crop. The crop of the unit plot was harvested separately. lratom 24, Alok 6201 and BRRI dhan 29 were harvested on 4,5 and 6 May 1999, receptively, BR2 matured late and it was harvested on 15 May 1999. Ten sample hills were selected at random from each plot to record crop characters. The grain and straw yields were recorded on whole plot basis after proper during. Data were statistically analyzed using the "Analysis of Variance" technique with the help of statistical computer package (MSTAT). Mean differences were adjudged by Duncan's Multiple Range Test.

Achievement/Findings:

It revealed that varieties significantly affected the plant height, effective and non-effective tillers hill^-1 , number of grains panicle^-1, number of sterile spikelets panicle^-1 , grain hybrid and straw yield BRRI dhan29 a modern variety, produced the highest grain yield and lratom 24 produced the lowest grain yield. The hybrid rice Alok 6201 showed similar result with BRRI dhan29. Weed infestation also reduced the rice yield significantly. Chemical weed control showed similar result with the weed free treatment while the no weeding treatment provided significantly lower yield. However, from the results of the experiment it is evident that BRRI dhan29 and Alok 6201 may be selected for cultivation in boro season for getting higher grain yield. BR2 may be used for its tall characteristics to suppress weed infestation and the herbicide Ronstar @ 21ha^-1 may be used for proper weed control in all the varieties studied.
