Cabbage and Cauliflower Marketing in Selected Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Cabbage and cauliflower are important vegetables for their commercial and nutrition values in the world as well as in Bangladesh. In the study of cabbage and cauliflower marketing, thirty farmers and fifty intermediaries were selected through purposive sampling procedure in Comilla Sadar and Barura thana of Camilla district. Data were collected during the months of December 1997 to January 1998. The marketing channel, marketing cost and marketing margin were analyzed. There were basically four tiers of market participants viz. producer-seller, paiker, aratdar and retailer. The marketing cost of cabbage and cauliflower incurred by farmers were Tk. 30.03 and Tk. 38.41 per quintal and among the cost items transportation cost was the highest. The marketing cost of intermediaries for cabbage and cauliflower were Tk. 78.00 and Tk. 31.00; and Tk. 75.00 and Tk. 30.00 for paiker and retailer, respectively. Among the cost items transportation cost, spoilage and damage cost were high (Tk. 14.50 and Tk. 12.00 per quintal for cabbage and Tk. 13.00 and Tk. 13.50 per quintal for cauliflower). The net margin earned by paikers and retailers were Tk. 8.67 and Tk. 44.00 per quintal for cabbage; and Tk. 8.33 and Tk. 75.00 per quintal for cauliflower. It was observed of an identified channel, farmers' net share in retail price was 66.66 per cent and 69.97 per cent for cabbage and cauliflower, respectively. Marketing problems faced by the farmers and intermediaries were also identified.

Objectives:

To identify the existing marketing channels, to estimate the marketing cost, marketing margins, price spread and farmers share in consumers' taka of cabbage and cauliflower at different stages of marketing.

Methodology:

In order to make assessment of the marketing system of cabbage and cauliflower, the study was conducted in Comilla Sadar and Barura thana of Comilla district which are the leading producing areas of cabbage and cauliflower. The respondents were divided into two major groups i.e. the farmers and the market intermediaries. In all 30 farmers were selected purposively which included 15 from Camilla Sadar and 15 from Barura thana. Fifty intermediaries were interviewed at 5 selected markets. The intermediaries involved in the marketing of cabbage and cauliflower were divided into three groups namely paiker, aratdar and retailer. Among the 50 intermediaries, 20 were paikers (10 from Comilia Sadar thana and 10 from Barura thana), 5 were aratdars (from Comilia Sadar), 25 were retailers (15 from Comilia Sadar and 10 from Barura thana). Thus, the total sample size became 80. Data were collected in the months of December 1997 to January 1998. Simple tabular technique of analysis was followed. In order to interpret the findings averages and percentages were used.

Although the cabbage and cauliflower are a source of nutrients and cash income for farmers moreover a large number of people are involved in the production and marketing of cabbage and cauliflower, the marketing system is not well developed and the farmers and the intermediaries have faced always a lot of problems. Due attention should be paid to solve the marketing problems like development of transportation system, physical and storage facilities should be increased at the market place, dissemination of market information, establishment of farmers organization, improvement of marketing facilities to make sound marketing and improvement of cabbage and cauliflower production in Bangladesh.
