An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from November 1995 to April 1996 to see the  effect of boron on the performance of wheat varieties under different sowing dates. The results revealed that November 30 sowing out yielded other dates of sowing. Grain yield decreased progressively as the sowing was delayed. There was no remarkable variation between the two varieties in terms of yield and yield attributes except plant height and length of spike. Boron @ 3.0 kg/ha produced the highest grain yield, which was statistically similar to that produced by 2.0 kg B/ha. Significantly the lowest grain yield was obtained from 0.0 kg B/ha and it was considerably different from the others. Interaction effect of sowing date and boron level was found to be significant for number of spike/m2 and 1000-grain weight. Thousand grain weight also differed significantly due to the interaction effect of variety and boron level and sowing date, variety and boron level.

To examine the varietal response of wheat to boron under different sowing dates.

The experiment was conducted at BAU, Mymensingh during the period from November 1995 to April 1996. The experiment comprised three sowing dates viz. Nov. 30, Dec. 15 and Dec. 30; two wheat varieties viz. Kanchan and Aghrani and four levels of boron viz. 0.0, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 kg/ha. Design of the experiment was split-split plot assigning sowing time in the main plot, variety in the sub plot and boron in the sub-sub plot. The treatments were replicated thrice. The unit plots size was 5m x 3m. Seed @ 120 kg/ha were sown continuously in 20 cm apart line. The land was fertilized with 120 kg N, 60 kg P205, 40 kg K20 and 20 kg S/ha.respectively. Boric acid powder was used as the source of boron. One-third of urea and entire amount of other fertilizers including boric acid as per treatment were applied as basal dose in the individual plots during final land preparation. The remaining two-third of urea was top-dressed in two equal splits at crown root initiation (CRI) stage and at booting stage of the crop after irrigation. Weeding was done two times during the crop growth period. The first weeding was done after two weeks and the second was done after five weeks of each sowing. The crop of all sowing dates received two irrigation-one at CRI stage and the other at early booting stage. Data on yield attributes were collected from 10 randomly selected plant in each plot. Number of spikes/m2 were counted from three randomly selected spots placing a one meter quadrate in each plot. Grain yield and 1000-grain weight were recorded plot-wise on 12% moisture content basis. The data recorded were compiled and tabulated in proper form and subjected to statistical analysis with the help of computer package MSTAT. The mean. differences among the treatments were tested with Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT).
