Impact of Credit on Rural Women Members of World Vision Project at Savar Thana

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted in Saver thana of Dhaka district. A randomly selected sample of 51 loanees under agricultural credit programme of World Vision (WV) were interviewed for collection of necessary data. Impact of credit on income, employment and asset endowment of women loanees according to their age, education level, and loan amount received, programme strategies taken by the World Vision were analysed. Tabular method of analysis was followed in this study. "Before" and "After" approach was used to measure the impact of credit. It was found that income and employment generation was higher for the loanees up to 35 years age having primary and secondary level of education than the loanees of above 35 years age with no schooling. It was further observed that the loanees who received a loan amount of Tk. 5001-13000 had higher income than the loanees who received loan up to Tk. 5000. The value of assets of the households was changed positively after joining the credit programme. The study also revealed that the package programme strategies such as functional educational course, weekly group meeting, loan feasibility study, fine to late loan depositors, signing agreement with the loanee, installation of World Vision office in the village and child sponsorship had a great importance on influencing loanees in loan utilisation and repayment in the study area. Problems faced by World Vision in operating credit programme were also analysed.

Objectives:

To assess the impact of credit on income, employment and assets endowment of women loanees according to their age, education level, and loan amount received and
To identify programme strategies taken and problems faced by World Vision in operating credit programme.

Methodology:

Out of 12 unions under Savar thana, six unions are served by the World Vision project. But credit programmes were continuing in four unions namely Ausulia, Bakurta, Birulia and Savar. One village was selected from each union. Thus, a total of four villages were selected as the study area. The women members who joined World Vision two years ago were considered as the population of this study. For drawing samples from this population, a list of women borrowers of the selected villages from four selected unions was collected from World Vision's office at Savar. Then, fifteen per cent of the listed borrowers of each selected village were taken randomly as samples for the study .In total, 51 loanees were selected as samples. The data were collected during June to July 1998 from the selected women members through personal interviews. In this study "Before and After" approach was followed because a good bench mark data are available for those who have taken credit for income-generating from WV project. In order to arrive at meaningful conclusion mainly tabular method of analysis was followed.

The study reveals that the loanees below 35 years of age and having primary and secondary level of education had higher income and employment generation compared to the loanees of 35 years and above with no schooling and it was further observed that the loanes who received a loan amount of Tk. 5001-13,000 had highest income and employment generation than the loaness who received loan upto Tk. 5000. The value of assets of the respondent households also changed positively after joining the credit programme. The study also reveals that the package programme strategies of WV exerted great influence to loanees in loan utilisation and repayment in the study area. The major problems faced by the WV Area Manager and Project Co-ordinator in operating the credit programme were limitation of fund and lack of manpower, respectively. The conclusion emerged from the study is that the loanees of the study area were successful in bringing a positive change in their life after being involved with the World Vision activities though, it was noticed that the rate of change was slow. However, the changes were meaningful in relative sense. There were little changes in income and employment generation according to age, education and loan amount received. In order to improve this situation provision for more educational facilities for the women and increasing the loan amount of members may be considered positive measures. It is also recommended that the authorities should take necessary steps for inclusion of the items that were not in the credit financing list in order to enable as many women loanees as possible to provide with the loans.
