A Simple Prediction Model for Transplanted Rice Yield at Different Growth Stages

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The grain yield of transplanted rice can be predicted on the basis of plant height and number of tillers hill^-1 with a fairly high accuracy as early as 45 days after transplanting.The proposed prediction model is the linear relationship of plant height and number of tillers to the grain yield.

Objectives:

To develop a simple model for predicting transplanted rice yield before harvest based on plant height, number of tillers and number of green leaves hill^-1 at different growth stages of rice plants.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in T.Aman season, 1988 with variety BR22 spaced at 20cm x 20cm, The crop was grown in an apparently homogeneous field under normal agronomic practices. The field was irrigated and insecticide was sprayed as and when required and the field was kept weed free as much as possible. Three areas, each of sizes 2m x2m termed as plots were randomly selected within the field and were demarcated leaving the border hills just after transplanting. Thus, each plot contained 10 hills. Information on the plant characters: plant height, number of tillers and number of green leaves hill^-1 were collected from all the selected hills at an interval of 15 days starting from 30 days after transplanting (DAT) and at harvest. At the maturity of the crop, each hill was harvested separately and packed in paper bags. Grain yield for each hill was measured. The actual yield of the plot was obtained by adding the grain yields of individual hills.Two linear models were tried for the prediction of yield at different growth stages before harvest. The models are: Modell : Y = a1 +b1PH +c1TN + d1GL +e1 and Model II : Y = a2 +b2PH +c2TN + d2GL +e2: Where, Y= Grain yield hill^-1, PH= Plant height hill-1, TN = Number of tillers hill^-1, GL= Nurr er of green leaves hill^-1 and e= Random error assumed to be N(O, a²) .

Results of the study imply that the grain yield from a transplanted rice field in T. Aman season can be predicted at any growth stage of the crop with high accuracy as early as 45 DAT using linear relationship of plant height and number of tillers hill^-1 to the grain yield.
