Submergence Tolerance of Transplant Aman Rice at Different Growth Stages

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Of the three growth stages viz. recovery, early tillering and early booting, submergence tolerance of rice plant at early tillering stage was found to be most critical followed by recovery and early booting stages. Early tillering stage appeared to be the most vulnerable to the survival irrespective of varieties. Tillering ability was drastically reduced due the submergence at recovery and early tillering stages. Among the BR varieties, BRRI dhan32 appeared to be more tolerant to submergence than BRRI dhan31 and BRRI dhan 30. BR11 was very susceptible when submerged at early tillering stage.

Objectives:

To compare and evaluate the submergence tolerance of BR varieties (BR11, BRRI dhan30, BRRI dhan31 and BRRI dhan32).

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted in the Plant Physiology Division of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute in 1997 from July to December. Thirty days old seedlings of BR11, BRRI dhan30, BRRI dhan31 and BRRI dhan32 were transplanted in pots using two per pot. Each pot containing 8kg soil was fertilized at the rate of 60-40-40 N, P₂0₅and K₂0 kg/ha. The pots were submerged in cemented tank. Tank was flooded by 70cm depth of water from the base of the plants. Water made turbid twice a day by clay solid. Plants were submerged for 10 days continuously. The plants submerged at different growth stages - a) Recovery (5 days after transplanting) b) Early tillering (2-3 tillers are formed) and c) Early booting stage. The pots were replicated five times and completely randomized design (CRD) was used. In order to observe tillering pattern, tillers were counted for every seven days interval. Flowering time was also observed at different stages. After maturity plant height and yield components were considered to observe yield performance.

Among the growth stages, early tillering stage appeared to be the most vulnerable to the submergence problem in all the varieties studies. In BR11 the plants could not survive at all and in BRRI dhan30 and BRRI dhan31 40% plants survived when submergence occurred at early tillering stage.Tillering ability was drastically reduced due the submergence at recovery and early tillering stages. Among the BR varieties, BRRI dhan32 appeared to be more tolerant to submergence than BRRI dhan31 and BRRI dhan 30. BR11 was very susceptible when submerged at early tillering stage.
