Infestation Status of Heart Rot Disease of Pasur (xylocarpus Mekongensis), Tree in the Sundarbans.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The infestation status of heart rot disease of pasur differ place to place and different locations of the Sundarbans. The analyzed result shows that it is heavily infested at Kalbogi. then it is followed at Baniakhali. It was observed and enumerated heart rot infestation status of different locations in the Sundarbans. It is affected (Less than 50% top dead and more than 50% top dead or heart rot (Dhor observed) severely at Kalabogy, Baniakhali and Bozbosa are heavily affected in the moderately saline water zone. The result shows that the percentage is 64%, 62% and 60% respectively. Then followed by Kasiabad 54% and Chunkuri 48%.Very low number of trees are affected at Supati covering 17% in the fresh water zone of the Sundarbans.The results also show that in all the locations of the Sundarbans diameter at breast height (dbh.) Class III (31-40cm) is highly affected 51%, then followed by dbh Class II (21-30cm) 24% and Class IV (>40cm) 18% and the lowest only 7% in the Class I (<20cm) . Water salinity data showed that the highest salinity found to occur at Chunkuri and lowest at Supati during May to November water salinity level decreases at all the locations and these raise up to 4 ppt at Supati.

Objectives:

To know the present status and scenarios of heart rot disease of passur in the Sundarbans.

Methodology:

The field study was conducted on the heart rot affected areas of the Sundarbans during last November 2007 to December 2009. Initially different important locations such as- Mirgamari, Sarankhola, Bogi, Supati, Katka, Charaputia, Karamjal, Dhangmari, Kalabogi, Baniakhali, Bozboza, Kasiabad, Chunkuri, Gewakhali, Kateshor, Kalagachhia, Burigoalini, Munshiganj, Kadamtala were visited thoroughly to get an overall scenario of trees in the Sundarbans. 100 individual trees were randomly selected for collecting data of heart rot affected trees in each of the six locations of the Sundarbans.The selected locations are Kalabogi, Baniakhali, Bozboza in the Moderate saline water zone, Kasiabad, Chunkuri in the strong saline water zone and Supati in the fresh water zone. Literature have been reviewed time to time and relevant materials and pictures also collected to conduct the works to explore the abundance, symptoms and infestation of heart rot disease and their occurrence in the Sundarbans. Field experience also enhances to prepare this paper. In the field infestation data of 6 locations, disease symptoms and samples were observed, data were compiled, analyzed and tabulated for interpreting the findings.

Achievement/Findings:

The disorders and diseases caused by different fungal pathogen. More than 50% pasur trees in the respective areas are affected by heart rot problem. The factors which causing these diseases are still not clearly identified but some biotic and abiotic factors are responsible for the causes.The wood loss becomes a very high rate which shall impact the total loss of economy and the Sundarbans ecosystem. So, to overcome these disorders and diseases special monitoring, care, multi disciplinary research with field study, introduction of proper management system are to be required to formulate and eradicate this problems in the Sundarbans.Three Fungal Pathogens were Identified and disease symtoms were known to detect the heart rot tree or healthy one.In this location infestation percentage of heart rot is lower than highly salinity labeled areas of the Sundarbans. Increasing water salinity level may be responsible for one of the cause of heart rot disease of pasur in the Sundarbans.
