Growth Performance and Sub-sectorial Variation of Fish Production in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The purpose of this study is to examine the growth performance of fish production in different sectors of Bangladesh for the period 1972/73 to 1994/95 using time series data. Inland, marine and aggregate fish production growth rate comparison between the sub-periods 1972-73 to 1984-85 and 1985-86 to 1994-95 and sub-sectorial variations over the years 1983-84 to 1994-95 were the objectives of this study. The exponential growth rates of inland, marine and aggregate fish production were 1%, 5.86% and 1.91% per annum, respectively. Growth rates of inland capture, inland culture and marine artisanal were positive and marine industrial was negative over the years 1983-84 to 1994-95.

Objectives:

(1) To determine the growth rates of fish production over the years 1972-73 to 1994-95.

(2) To asses sub-sectorial variations of fish production.

(3) To compare growth rates between two sub-periods 1972-73 to 1984- 85 and 1985-86 to 1994-95.

Methodology:

This study used secondary data on sectorial production over a period of 23 years for the country as a whole. Time series data have been used for the analysis in order to achieve different objectives. The data were obtained from various publications of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS). To estimates the growth rates of inland, marine and total fish production of the country, the exponential model was fitted to the data for the present study.

Achievement/Findings:

Inland production formed the bulk of country's fish production. Share of the inland sector peaked in the early seventies (1972-73 to 1974-75) accounting for about 89 per cent of the total fish production. During this period, the inland culture fishery did not play a very significant role. The contribution of inland fishery to the total catch started declining thereafter consistently over the period till 1989-90 bringing its share down to only 72 per cent. Again the inland fish production was increasing very slowly over the period 1990-91 to 1994-95. During this period, the inland culture fishery played a very significant role.production of inland open water capture fisheries has declined sharply form 1983-84 to 19::10-91.The exponential growth rates of inland, marine and aggregate fish production were 1%, 5.86% and 1.91% per annum, respectively. Growth rates of inland capture, inland culture and marine artisanal were positive and marine industrial was negative over the years 1983-84 to 1994-95.
