Pineapple Production and Resource Use Efficiency at Farmers' Level in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Pineapple (Ananas comosus) is a nutritious fruit grown well in 29 AEZ in Bangladesh. Due to its downward production, a micro level study with a sample of 96 pineapple growers was conducted in two districts under 29 AEZ with Cobb-Douglas production model for identifying resource productivity, economic rationality and resource use efficiency of the farmers. The functional analysis revealed that in the study regions although farmers are rational, yet most of the inputs used in pineapple production were not at optimum level. The producers in study areas could increase their return from pineapple production through reallocation and intensive use of their resources. However, for efficient and intensive use of technological inputs producers need appropriate information on balance doses of fertilizers and also proper management practices.

Objectives:

To judge the optimal productivity of inputs, rationality and efficiency of the pineapple growers in resource use.
To suggest reallocation of the resources in case of inefficient use so that the input factors can be economically used in pineapple production.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in four thanas namely Srimongal and Maulvibazar Sader in Maulvibazar district and Ramgamati Sader and Naniarchar thana in Rangamati district, respectively. These thanas under 29 AEZ were selected purposively where pineapple has been grown in large scale in two districts. Six pineapple growing blocks in Srimongal and 4 blocks in Maulvibazar Sador thana and the list of pineapple growers in 10 blocks in Maulvibazar district were prepared. Similarly in Rangamati district 14 agricultural blocks, 7 blocks in each selected thana and the list of pineapple growers were obtained. So, 24 blocks in two districts were selected. From each of the 24 pineapple growing blocks, 4 pineapple farmers were randomly selected. Thus of 96 pineapple farmers in this study, 40 farmers were from Maulvibazar district and 56 farmers were from Rangamati district, respectively. Data were collected from the pineapple farmers in the selected blocks during the growing and harvesting period. The pre-tested questionnaires were used for collecting data. Selected farmers were interviewed directly several times through frequent visits during pineapple growing and harvesting season. Data pertaining to the requirements of different input-factors, their quantity, prices of inputs, cost spent on suckers used and number of pineapples harvested and total return obtained from pineapple were collected. Data on inputs and return were carefully recorded so that it could be logically transferred into different variables and measured separately . Data of the whole sample were processed for statistical analysis at BARI computer center. Cobb-Douglas production function model was fitted which was specified as follows: (( Y= AX₁^b1X₂^b2..................Xn ^bn) Where, Y is the dependent variable and X1 through Xn are explanatory variables. 'A' is the constant and b1 through bn are the regression coefficients for X1 through Xn factors of production, respectively.
