An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from March 1996 to August 1996 to determine the effect of seedling and method of transplanting on the yield and yield contributing characters of aus rice (BR26). The seedlings of different ages, such as 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55 and 60 days old were transplanted on the same day. Seedlings were transplanted in line and haphazard methods. An equal number of plant population was maintained per unit area in both the transplanting methods. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with four replications in which the age of seedlings was assigned in the main plots and the method of transplanting in the sub-plots. Plant height, number of total tillers per hill, number of fertile tillers per hill, number of spikelets per panicle, number of grains per panicle, 1000-grain weight, grain and straw yields were affected significantly due to different ages of seedling. Forty day-old seedlings gave grain yield (3.29 t/ha) which was identical with 35 and 45 day-old seedlings. Lowest grain yield (2.1 t/ha) was obtained from 60 day-old seedlings. Plant height, number of grains per panicle, straw yield were significantly affected due to method of transplanting. Line transplanting method showed better performance regarding yield and yield contributing characters of rice than haphazard method. No significant effect was observed on yield and yield contributing characters of aus rice due to interaction of age of seedling and method of transplanting. The optimum age of seedling of BR26 aus rice was 35 to 45 days for getting better yield.

To find out the effect of age of seedling and method of transplanting on the yield and yield contributing characters of aus rice.

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from March to August, 1996. The soil was sandy loam having a pH of 6. 9. The seedlings of different ages, viz. 25,30, 35, 40,45,50,55 and 60 days old were transplanted on the same day. Seedlings were transplanted in line and haphazard methods. It included one aus rice variety viz. BR26. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with four replications which the ages of seedlings were assigned to the main plots and the method of transplanting to the subjects. The size of each unit plot was 4.0m x 2. 5m. The experimental plots were fertilized with urea, triple super phosphate and muriate of potash at the rate of 133, 86 and 67 kg/ha, respectively (BRRI, 1991). In line transplanting method seedlings were transplanted at a spacing of 25 cm apart lines maintaining 15 cm plant to plant distance. In both the methods three seedlings per hill were transplanted and same number of hills per unit area was maintained. The rice plants were harvested at full maturity. The data on yield parameters were measured at harvest. Plant height, number of total tillers per hill, number of fertile tillers per hill, panicle length, number of spikelets per panicle, weight of 1000 grains grain and straw yield and harvest index were measured from the harvested hills. The collected data were analyzed statistically and the significance of the mean differences was adjudged by Duncan's New Multiple Range Test (DMRT) .

Twenty five day old seedlings produced the tallest plant (84.85 cm) and it was identically followed by 30, 35, 40 and 45-day old seedlings . But 60-day old seedlings produced the shortest ones (75.42 cm) and it was identical with that of 55-day old seedlings. Highest number of total tillers per hill (14.85) was obtained from 25 day old seedling which was identical up to 45-day old. The lowest number of total tillers per hill (8.70) was produced by 60-day old seedling and it was identical with those of 50 and 55-day old seedlings. Highest number of spikelets per panicle (83.92) was produced with 25-day old seedling and it was identical with those of 30 and 35-day old seedlings. Lowest number of spikelets per panicle (80.94} was produced when 50-day old seedlings were transplanted.Highest 1000-grain weight (22. 79 g) was obtained from 40-day seedling and lowest 1000-grain weight (20.30g) was obtained from 30-day old seedling. Forty day old seedling gave the highest grain yield (3.29 t/ha) and lowest grain yield (2.1 t/ha} was produced when 60-day old seedling was transplanted. Highest harvest index (0.49) was obtained by transplanting 45 day old seedlings. The optimum age of seedling of BR26 aus rice was 35 to 45 days for getting better yield.
