Performance of Advanced Generation Rapeseed Mutants Under High and Low Input Conditions

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The performance of four newly developed rapeseed mutants was evaluated at the sub-station farm of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) and farmers' field, in Rangpur, in three cropping years during 1998-99 to 2000-01. Results showed that the mutant MM-20 performed consistently better in both high and low input management practices in each year. It produced the highest mean seed yield as revealed by mean analysis covering three years. This mutant, however, did not differ significantly with two of the four check varieties viz. Binasarisha-4 and Binasarisha-3. The new mutant MM-20 may possibly be rated as a prospective variety for commercial cultivation in the northern region of Bangladesh.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of four newly developed mutants of rapeseed at Northern region of Bangladesh especially in the Rangpur district.

Methodology:

Four true breeding mutants, viz, MM-7, MM-8, MM-19 and MM-20 of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) were obtained from treating seeds of Nap-3 with gamma rays of 900 Gy which were selected in M5 generation. Performance of the mutants compared to the existing varieties, Binasarisha-3, Binasarisha-4, Barisarisha-8 and Tori-7 were evaluated at the northern region of Bangladesh during 1998-99 to 2000-01 cropping seasons. The experiment of all the cropping seasons were laid out in randomized complete block design with four replications. Sowing was done on the 22nd, 11th and 8th November for the years 1998, 1999 and 2000, respectively. Unit plot size was 4m x 5m having 30 em spacing between rows. During 1998-99 and 1999-2000 the experiment was conducted at the research station of BINA, angpur under recommended management practices (high input) while in 2000-2001 the experiment was conducted at the farmer's field of Sayadpur, Rangpur under farmers' management practices (low input). Data on different plant parameters were collected from the experiment of all the years following the standard techniques and subjected to appropriate statistical analyses. The mean values of different characters were adjudged by Duncan's New Multiple Range Test using the formula as suggested by Steel and Torrie.
