The study was conducted to determine the seasonal variation of organochlorine and carbonates insecticides residues (DDT, Aldrin, Dieldrin, Endrine, Lindane, Heptachlore) in water, soil, fish of the south patches of Bay of Bengal. In the south- patches region of the Bay of Bengal, some fishes, shellfishes, water & sediment are scatteredly contaminated by different organochlorine pesticides. Out of 5 stations, water from 4 stations contained pp' DDT, DOD, ODE Aldrin, Endrin and Heptachlor. The concentration of organochlorine residues were more during the post-monsoon period incase of fish (Parastromateus niger, Argyrop spinifer and Panulirus polyphagus). Highest concentration of 4707 ng/g of total OCs contained in Parastromatens niger (Black pomfret) during post-mosoon. Lindane, DDT, dieldrin and heptachlor were predominant in total OC residues. Only two locations showed the OC residues during monsoon incase of sediment. Presence of lindane, DDT and heptachlor were found only in these locations. In station 1 during pre monsoon no organochlorine was found but in monsoon a large amount of pp' DDT was found (249.00 ng.g-1) and DOD was found at a concentration of 53.43 ng,g-1. Total organochlorine load was 299.44ng.g-1. In post monsoon season 59.43 ng.g-1 of pp' DDT and 22.29 ng.g-1 of heptachlor were found. Among the three seasons, the concentration of the pesticide residues were comparatively higher in monsoon period. Out of 5 stations, there were not a single group of carbamates present in water in any season. Water samples from the 4th station was found to contain. pp' DDT, DOD during monsoon. DOE were found in station 1&2 during pre-monsoon & monsoon respectively. Only station 1 contain pp' DDT & DOD during post monsoon. Out of 5 stations 3 station contained endrin during monsoon. Among the 5 station only contained aldrin & heptachlor during post monsoon. There were no lindane and dieldrin during the three season in any of 5 station.

To study the residue level of organochlorine  and carbonates insecticides in the sediments, fish and water of the South Patches of Bay of Bengal.

The sediment samples are divided into three replicates in petridishes and subjected to freeze dry at -38oc. The dried samples were sieved using sieve of 60 micron size, having moisture content of 2-3%. Subsequently the samples were extracted using soxhlet apparatus with double distilled hexane. The extract was concentrated in a rotary vacuum evaporator and transferred to glass-stoppered test tube. Then concentrated extract was cleaned up using florisil column and analyzed with GLC, HPLC and TLC did the analysis. Fish and Fishshell sampls were analyzed for pesticide residues accruing to the method of IAEA PROTOCOL REF. 187. RCM, Monaco. The standards were prepared as per the guideline received from IAEA.Among the commercial fishing ground south-patches had been selected to conduct the research work. Water and sediment samples were collected from the different locations situated at the south-patches and from the coast of Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh. The selected fishes and shell fishes were also collected  from these areas which were available all the year long. From designated locations of the cost and south patches of Bay of Bengal, 24 sediment samples and ten samples of each fish species were collected during pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon seasons of 1996-1997. The fish and shell fish samples were collected with a trawl net by fishing trawler. Trawling was carried out at 32-35 mm depth. Fish and shell fish samples were collected from the South Patches of the Bay of Bengal during three season, pre-,monsoon, monsoon and post monsoon of the investigated period (September, 1996-997). Collected samples were wrapped in aluminum foil separately and squeezed out the air and closed the sample by folding the aluminum foil and frozen into board vessel at -20°c. All samples were weighed, coded and labeled on arrival at the Agrochemical Residue Analysis Laboratory, Institute of Food and Radiation Biology, Atomic Energy Research Establishment, Savar, Dhaka and Stored in deep freezer at -2ooc. unit analysis started.
