A field experiment was conducted with four rice varieties viz. Binadhan-5, Binadhan-6, TKM 6 and TN 1 during Boro season to determine the relative abundance of green leaf hopper (Nephotettix spp.) and their predators at different plant ages. The results indicate a gradual and significant increase in abundance of leafhoppers and their predators with the advancement of plant age. Green leaf hoppers and their predators were more abundant in TN 1 and Binadhan- 6. The incidence of Nephotettix spp. was higher in the morning than that of afternoon. The abundance of most of the predators was similar at both times of the day except wolf spider, ladybird beetle and mirid bug which were more abundant at morning. Out of nine predators namely, long mouth spider, lynx spider, wolf spider, dwarf spider, orb spider, lady bird beetle, damsel fly, carabid beetle and mirid bug, the predators mirid bug, long mouth spider, lynx spider and lady bird beetle and mirid bug, the predators mirid bug, long mouth spider, lynx spider and lady bird beetle were made highly positive correlation and maximum direct effect on the abundance of green leaf hoppers.

Green leaf hoppers, Predators, Abundance, Varieties and Day time

  Rice

To study the effect of plant ages and day time on the abundance of rice green leafhoppers (Nephotettix  spp.) and their predators in different rice varieties.

A field experiment laid in randomized block design with five replications using four rice varieties viz. Binadhan-5, Binadhan-6, TKM 6 and TN 1 was conducted at experimental fields of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during Boro season of 1999. The unit plot size was 5.1 m x 4.0 m and total number of plots were twenty. Thirty five days old rice seedlings of all the tested varieties were transplanted on the same day using the spacing of 20 x 15 cm. The experimental plots were fertilized with Urea, TSP, MP, Zypsum and Zn at the rate of 215, 180, 100, 110 and 15 kg/ha, respectively. Inter culture operations, except pesticide application, were done as per recommendation for rice. Ten random sweeps per plot were made to collect the rice green leafhoppers and their predators. The sweeping started from 20 days after transplantation (DAT) and continued up to 70 DAT, with 10 days interval using two sweeps, one at morning and another at afternoon. After each sweeping, samples were brought to the laboratory, identified and counted. The collected data were then analyzed statistically after their conversion into square root [Y = √(X+0.5)]. The mean values were adjudged with Duncan's Multiple Range Test. (Duncan, 1955) at 5% level. To determine quantitative relationship between the Nephotettix spp. and their predators correlation matrix for all possible combination was worked out by the method described by Hayes et at. (1955). Correlation coefficient was further partitioned into components of direct and indirect effect by path co-efficient analysis following Dewey and Lu (1959) taking all the characters (prey and predators) into consideration. Rice green leafhoppers were considered as resultant variable.

It may be concluded that the use of less susceptible variety of rice and encouragement of natural, predators like, long mouth spider, mirid bug, lady bird beetle, wolf spider, lynx spider, carabid beetle, damsel fly etc may be helpful to control green leaf hoppers in rice field.
