Effect of Growing Conditions and Time of Operation on the Success and Survivability of Cleft Grafting of Sapota

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present experiment was conducted at the Germplasm Centre (GPC) of Fruit Tree Improvement Project (FTIP), Department of Horticulture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the period from August, 2010 to October, 2011 to investigate the performance of cleft grafting of sapota cv. BAU Sapota-I. The experiment consisted of (i) two growing conditions viz. open condition and poly tunnel condition and ii) twelve months of grafting viz. first week in each month (August, 2010 to July, 20ll). The grafting were done at kept under observation for following three months to determined the graft survivability. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Results revealed that, the minimum time required for bud breaking (12.89 days), leaf opening (16.68 days) in poly tunnel condition. The maximum stionic height (50.32 cm), numbers of new leaves (13.78) per graft, percent of success and survival (both as 96.39%) were achieved at 90 DAG, in poly tunnel condition when grafting was done on first week in June, 2011. Therefore, the results of the present investigation suggested that grafting operation on first week in June in both conditions is suitable for higher percentage of success, survivability and growth of BAU Sapota-I. But it is prominently mentionable for the year round cleft grafting of BAU Sapota-I, poly tunnel condition is much more effective than open condition in spite of having similar response of both conditions in only June month

Objectives:

To study the effect of growing conditions and time of grafting operation on the success and survivability of sapota cv. BAU Sapota-I.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out to study the effect of growing conditions and time of grafting operation on the success and survivability of cleft grafting of sapota cv. BAU Sapota-I at the Germplasm Centre (GPC) of Fruit Tree Improvement Project (FTIP), Department of Horticulture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the period from August, 20 I 0 to October, 2011 to investigate the performance of cleft grafting of sapota cv. BAU Sapota-I. The experiment consisted of (i) two growing conditions viz. open condition and poly tunnel condition and ii) twelve months of grafting viz. first week in each month (August, 2010 to July, 2011). The grafting were done at July, 20 II kept under observation for following three months to determined the graft survivability. The two factor experiment consisting of 24 treatment combinations was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. For each treatment combination grafting operations were performed on six rootstocks of each plot of a block. Thus in total grafts 2x12x3x6= 432 were made. The treatment combinations were randomly assigned to each unit plot, so as to allot one treatment combination only in each block.

Achievement/Findings:
