Attitude of Rural Women. Towards Poultry Raising and Goat Rearing Activities of Homestead Agriculture

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

: The study was carried out to assess the extent of attitude of rural women in two selected aspects of homestead agricultural activities, viz. poultry raising and goat rearing; and to explore the relationships between ten selected characteristics of rural women. Data were collected from a random sample of hundred (100) housewives in two villages of Debiganj Upazila under Panchagarh district. The extent of attitude of rural women was ascertained in 6 items of each of the two selected homestead agricultural activities. A comparative attitude index was computed in six statements both under poultry raising and goat rearing by using the attitude scale. Co-efficient of correlation •r' was computed to test the relationships between the dependent and independent variables. The highest proportion (85 percent in poultry raising and 83 percent in goat rearing) of the rural women had moderately favourable attitude. Computed •r' values indicate that age, family size, aspiration and fatalism of the rural women had no significant relationships with their attitude in poultry raising and goat rearing.

Objectives:

: i. To determine the attitude of rural women in homestead poultry raising and goat rearing,

ii. To explore the relationships between the selected characteristics of the rural women and their attitude towards homestead poultry raising and goat rearing. .

Methodology:

Study location and data collection: In all 496 rural women from two villages namely Chartistapara and Tistapara of Chilahati Union of Debigonj Upazila under Panchagarh district constituted the population for this study. The female heads of the households of both the villages, Chartistapara and Tistapara, constituted the population of this study. Thus, 100 housewives (around 20 percent) among the 496 farm families were the sample for the study. Data were collected during 1 August to 30 August, 2002. Measurement of variables: The characteristics of rural women such as age, education, family size, farm size, family income, credit availability, agricultural knowledge, communication exposure, aspiration and fatalism were selected as independent variables while attitude of rural women towards homestead poultry raising and homestead goat rearing were considered as the dependent variables of the study.Independent variables: Age of a rural women referred to the period of time from her birth to the day of interview. Age was measured in terms of years. Education was measured by the years of schooling. If a respondent did not know how to read and write, her education score was taken as zero (0). If a respondent did not know how to read and write but could sign her name only then she got a score of 0.5. Besides, the respondent got actual score of her year of schooling, i.e., 1 for class one, 2 for class two and so on. Family size referred to the number of individuals in the family of the respondent who live and eat together. Farm size referred to the area of land owned by a farmer or his wife on which farming activities are carried out.

Achievement/Findings:

Rural women of the study area having moderately favorable attitude in both homestead poultry raising and goat rearing activities. In fact, these activities are mostly performed by women in Bangladesh and have rightly been reflected in the present study. Of course, their extent o attitude in different items under each activity varied depending on the nature of activity, availability of inputs and also due to other characteristics of the rural women. Age of the rural women had no significant relationship with their attitude in homestead poultry raising and goat rearing. It means that housewives of all were somehow engaged in those homestead activities. Future programmes which are undertaken by Government organizations or NGOs may consider the age of the rural women while selecting target group. Education, farm size, family income and credit availability have significantly positive relationship with the attitude of rural women in homestead poultry raising and goat rearing. It implies that these characteristics of the rural women have profound influence on their attitude in those activities.
