Tribal Ppeole,s Perception of the Agricultural Development Activities of World Vision

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The main purpose of the study was to find out the tribal people's perception of the agricultural development activities of World Vision. To achieve this, the study attempted to identify and categorize the agricultural development activities performed by the WV with the tribal; to determine the extent of functional participation of tribal people in the agricultural activities of WV; to find out tribal people's perception of the agricultural development activities of WV; and to explore the relationship between perception and 13 selected characteristics. Data were obtained from 120 randomly selected respondents of four selected villages of Haluaghat upazila under Mymensingh district during August Ist' to September 5, 2001. Co-relation coefficient (r) were computed to determine the relationship between the independent and dependent va riables.Findings indicate that there were about fifteen agricultural development activities performed by the WV. These were categorized in six for easy understanding and controlled Oer them while studying There 'ere wide variation in the functional participation of the tribal peoples m WV agricultural development activities as indicated by the standard activity functional participation score (SAFPS) rangmg from 30 86 to 100 against the possible range of 0 to I00.

Objectives:

4. To explore the relationship between tribal people 's selected characteristics and their perception of agricultural development activities of WV

Methodology:

To achieve the objectives of the present study, field level data were collected from I center of a union (Haluaghat) under Haluaghat upazila, Mymensingh. This upazila occupies an area of 356.07 Sq. km. including 2.05 Sq. km. forest area. lt is located between 24°59' and 25°12' north latitudes and between 90014' and 90033' east longitudes. It i s bounded on the north by India, on the cast by Dhobaura upzila, on the south by Phulpur upzila a nd on the west by Nalitabari upzila of Sherpur district (See Bangladesh map showing the specific location of the ADP under study Haluaghat upzilla map showing the specific l ocation of the selected union. In these villages crop, livestock and vegetable producti on were the most important project activities under the gu i dance of WV. Most of the tribal people were organized under different development projects like paddy cultivation, poultry farming and homestead agriculture. Among the I i st of prescribed works crop production appears to be an important aspect reflecting the significant role of WV members. The other reasons behind the selection of the area were easy transportation facilities, a relatively homogeneous physiographic condition and the access to a acquaintance of the researcher to the project area.
