Effect of Planting Time on the Organoleptic Properties and Cracking Behavior of Three Varieties of Carrot

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from October 1993 to April 1994 to study the effect of different time of planting on the organoleptic properties and cracking behavior of three varieties of carrot. Seeds of three varieties of carrot namely, New Kuroda, KS Kuroda and Nantes Were planted at five different dates viz. Nov 1, Nov 16, Dec 1, Dec 1, Dec 16 and Dec 31. The variety New Kuroda was fund to be the best in respect of quality judged which was followed by KS Kuroda and Nantes. Late planting produced carrot of poor quality as they were hard in texture, dry in mouth feel and poor in overall acceptability. Among the three varieties, KS Kuroda showed more cracking of roots and Nantes showed less cracking.

Objectives:

To increase the production and quality of carrot by planting in proper time.

Methodology:

The field experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during October 1993 to April 1994 and the laboratory work was done both at the Horticulture laboratory and the Humboldt Soil Testing Laboratory, Department of Soil Science, BAU, Mymensingh. Two different factors was considered in the study. They were (A) Planting time: Nov 1, Nov 16, Dec 1, Dec 16 and Dec 31 and (B) variety: New Kroda (Japan), KS Kuroda (Japan) and Nantes (Europe). The 2 factorial experiment was laid out following a randomized complete block design with three replications. Five shallow furrows per plot at a distance of 20 cm with 1.5 cm depth were made in each plot. Seeds mixed with sand were sown in lines continuously by hand and covered with loose soil. Initially light irrigation was done with watering can. Fifty plants/plot were allowed to grow ultimately. Plant spacing of 10 cm was adjusted by thinning at two stages; 20 and 30 days after sowing. Weeding was done as and when necessary. The field was irrigated by flood method. Opinion collected on taste and quality was noted in a pre designed questionnaire. The data for the characters under study were statistically analyzed wherever necessary.

Achievement/Findings:

Cracking of roots varied among the varieties and in different planting time. Among three varieties, New Kuroda and KS Kuroda had higher degree of cracking . Cracking increased with the increase of growth and development . In all varieties, cracking was also affected by planting time. At 100 days after planting, higher degree of cracking was found in 2nd (Nov 16) planting followed by 1st planting (Nov 1) and 3rd planting (Dec 1). Cracking was less at 4th (Dec 16) and 5th plantings (Dec 31).
