Canopy Modification Practices on Earliness, Yield and Fibre Quali1y in Cotton

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at different locations to evaluate the effect of canopy modification on cotton genotypes in respect of earliness, yield and fibre quality during May 2006 to January 2007. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications having two factors viz., genotypes and canopy modification (detopping and debranching of monopod). The results suggested that there was no significant effect of detopping and debranching of monopods on earliness but had significant influence on yield, yield contributing characters and fibre quality of cotton genotypes.

Objectives:

To find out the effect of detopping of apical part of cotton plant on earliness, yield and quality of cotton for a new management technology and the effect of removal of vegetative branches on earliness, yield and quality of cotton.

Methodology:

The field experiment was conducted at Cotton Research, Training and Seed Multiplication Farm, Sreepur, Gazipur during kharif season on 15th June of 2006 to March 2007 to evaluate the effect of canopy modification practices on earliness, yield and quality of cotton genotypes. The experimental plot belongs to the climatic condition, which is subtropical in nature and characterized by heavy rainfall from June to September (78-92%) and scanty in winter (1-11%) and mean rainfall is around 2200 mm per year (Anon. , 1989). The experimental plot belongs to Madhupur tract (AEZ 28). The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications having two factors viz. genotypes and canopy modification (detopping and debranching of monopod) . Detopping and debranching of monopod were done in 10 randomly selected plants of each genotype after 60 days of sowing. Detopping of cotton plants were done by a sharp knife 5-7 cm from the tip of the plant. Monopodia! branches were cut at the base of the stem of cotton plant. The recorded data on various parameters of the crop were statistically analyzed using RCBD design and between the treatments means were compared by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Achievement/Findings:

The genotypes expressed different amount of yield at different canopy modification. In treatment, SR-01 which recorded the maximum yield (3.04 t ha^-1). The effect of this treatment was statistically superior to the rest of the treatments under study. Genotype BC-0405 recorded 2.97 t ha^{- 1} yield and ranked second position.The maximum fineness of fibre under canopy modification and control practices (4.80 and 4.8, respectively) was found at BC-0294 of cotton. The minimum fineness of fibre under canopy modification and control practices (3.80 and 3.76) was recorded from BC-0165 and BC-0406 genotypes of cotton, respectively.Detopping and debranching of monopodial branches had no effect on earliness but had significant effect on yield and yield contributing characters of cotton plant.
