Effect of Intercropping on the Growth and Yield of Edible Podded Pea

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment on the effect of intercropping cabbage, carrot and chilli with adible podded pea (EPP) was carried out at the Central Research Station of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during the rabi season of 1997-98. The principal crop was the EPP and component crops were cabbage, carrot and chilli. The treatment combination were arranged in a randomized complete block design replicated thrice. Different growth and yield attributes were reduced for the component crops when they were grown under interecropping compared with sole cropping. The relative yield of all the component crops also decreased with intercropping. The EPP equivalent yield was the highest in sole cabbage and the lowest in sole chilli. The EPP equivalent yield and land equivalent ratio decreased in all the intercropped combinations. The highest net return as well as benefit cost ratio was obtained with sole cabbages, which were also higher than sole EPP.

Objectives:

To study the growth and yield of pea under different intercropping systems and to establish the best compatible intercrop combination of pea in terms of yield and economic return.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Central Research Station of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during the rabi season of 1997-98. The experimental area is situated in a high land belonging to the grey terrace soil. The intercropping experiment consisted of four vegetables of which edible podded pea was the principal crop. The treatments under study were T₁ = Sole edible podded pea, T₂ = Edible podded pea+ Cabbage, T₃ =Edible podded pea+ Carrot, T₄ =Edible podded pea+ Chilli, T₅ = Sole Cabbage, T₆ = Sole Carrot and T₇= Sole Chilli. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The relative yield was calculated by dividing the yield of edible podded pea (EPP), cabbage, carrot and chilli as intercrops with respective sole crop yield. Edibile podded pea (EPP) equivalent yield was calculated by converting the yield of cabbage, carrot and chilli into the yield of EPP (green pods) on the basis of prevailing market price using the following formula (Anuanetulu et al., 1982). Data on different parameters were compiled and appropriates statistical tools like MS Excel, SPSS and procedures were used as per the objective of the study.

Achievement/Findings:

Plant height of EPP was not affected significantly when it was intercropped with cabbage, carrot or chilli. The highest plant height was achieved when the crop was grown as sole crop and the plant height decreased when the crop was grown in combination with other crops. The plant height reached to 98.13, 98.70 and 86.77 em respectively, when grown with cabbage, carrot and chilli. The decrease in plant height under intercropping may be attributed due to intense competition of the crop for natural resources like water, nutrients and light. The number of branches/plant was significantly influenced due to intercropping and the highest value (5.73) was recorded when the crop was grown as sole crop. But the lowest number of branches/plant was produced by the plants grown with cabbage or chilli. The overall result of the experiment suggested that sole cropping of edible podded pea and cabbage were more profitable than intercropping EPP with cabbage and chilli which indicated its incompatibility of intercropping these crops. But EPP + carrot production was better than sole carrot. However, further research is needed to find out the best edible podded pea based profitable intercroping combination with other crops.
