Agricultural Problem Confrontation of the Farm Youth in a Selected Block of Haor Area of Mohanganj Upazila Under Netrakona District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The aim of this study was to analyze: i) agricultural problem confrontation, ii) income earning problem confrontation, iii) health and nutritional problem confrontation and iv) nueational problem confrontation of the farm youth as the dependent variables of the study while the independent variables included were age, education, agricultural knowledge, experience in crop, livestock and fisheries, organizational participation, cosmopolitness, extension contact, leisure time activities, family farm size, family income, innovative ness and ability to withstand crisis. The study was conducted in three villages of Mohangonj Upazila under Netrakona district. Data were collected from 104 farm youth living in 316 farm families with the help of interview schedule during the period from February- April 2001. Appropriate scales were developed in order to measure the concerned variables. Basic statistics like mean, standard deviation, range and percentage were used to intepret the data. Correlation (r) analysis was conducted to explore the relationships between the independent and dependent variables.

Objectives:

l.To analyze the extent of problem confrontation of the farm youth in the following four selected aspects. The selected aspects are:

a Agricultural problem confrontation

b. Income earning problem confrontation

c. Health and nutritional problem confrontation

d. Recreational problem confrontation

Methodology:

Three villages of Mohanganj Upazila under Netrakona district, namely, Paschilll Tetulia, Purba Tetulia and Hanbir (under Tctulia Union) were selected purposively as the locale of this study. Mohang; Upazila is situated at distance of about 70 km from BAU towards North-East of Mymensingh town. The researcher has been living near the locale of research for a long time and became acquainted with the farming community of Mohanganj. The poor socio-economic condition of these villages including the number of farm youth in these villages made the researcher aware of the urgent need of extension programmes for this neglected client group. He interacted with the Mohanganj Upazila Agricultural Officer and Youth Development Officer of Mohanganj to enquire about the present situation of deprived farm youth.

Achievement/Findings:

Among the 30 items of agricultural problem confrontation of the farm youth the top six (in order) were: i) no arrangement of loan for the farm youth for fish cultivation (284), ii) lack of government program in agriculture for the farm youth (280), iii) absence of loan giving agencies for establishing farm in locality (276), iv) general people face problem for fishery due to government easing of Jalmohal (276), v) lack of government programs for establishing poultry farm (270) and vi) lack of agricultural loan for the farm youth (263). The lowest PI was found in negligence in treatment of livestock (58). However, in respect of overall agricultural problem confrontation, the highest proportions (44%) of the farm youth were in the low category. Out of ten items income earning problem confrontation, the top four problems =i) least scope of agricultural work in the long period of rainy season (285), ii) lack of government programs for the farm youth (277), iii) passing unemployed period during rainy season due to lack of opportunities (276) and vi) absence of loan giving agencies for youth development activities (257). Four of the remaining income earning problem confrontation had problem index over 200. On the basis of overall income earning problem confrontation the highest proportion (46%) of the farm youth was in the low category.
