Performance of Photoperiod Sensitive Modern Aromatic Rice Varieties as Influenced by Planting Dates in Boro Season

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute Farm, Gazipur, during boro season to find out the optimum planting date for higher productivity of modern aromatic photoperiod sensitive fine rice varieties, namely BR5, BRRI dhan34, BRRI dhan37 and BRRI dhan38. The varieties were transplanted from 10 December through 25 January at an interval of 15 days, both in 2000 and 2001 Forty-day old seedlings were transplanted at a space of 20 cm x 20 cm. Results revealed that plant height, number of tillers per plant and dry matter in plant increased with the advancement of planting dates. On the contrary, the number of panicles, grains panicle^-1, panicle length, grain yield and growth duration decreased with delaying of planting dates. The intermediate stature plant type of BRRI dhan37 and BRRI dhan38 exhibited higher number of panicles (301-328 m^-2) and heavier individual grain (15.35-19.83g}, consequently higher grain yield (3.79-4.0 t ha^-l) irrespective of planting dates.

Objectives:

To find out the optimum planting date for higher productivity of modern aromatic photoperiod sensitive fine rice varieties, namely BR5, BRRI dhan34, BRRI dhan37 and BRRI dhan38.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute Farm, Gazipur, during boro season ,2000 and 2001. The modern aromatic rice BR5, BRRI dhan34, BRRI dhan37 and BRRI dhan38 were transplanted on 10 December, 25 December, 10 January and 25 January both in 2000 and 2001. Forty-day-old seedlings were transplanted spaced at 20 cm x 15 cm by using 2-3 seedlings hill^{- 1}. The treatments were distributed in a split-plot design, placing planting date in the main plot and varieties in the sub plot and replicated thrice. Fertilizers were applied @ 80-60-40-10-4 kg N, P₂0₅, K ₂ 0, S and Zn ha^-1, respectively through urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate during final land preparation except urea . Urea was top-dressed in three equal splits at 15 DAT, 30 DAT and at 5 days before panicle initiation as per BRRI (2004). The crop field was kept weed free by 2 hands weedings at 20 and 40 DAT of each planting date. The plant height, tiller number and dry matter were measured at different growth stages at 15 day intervals starting from 30 DAT. Five destructive sample hills were collected from each individual plot out side of the harvested area to measure different growth parameters. The plant height was measured and the tillers were counted from the sample hills. The same sample was also used for the dry matter determination drying them in an oven for 72 hours. For grain yield five square meter area was harvested from the center of the plot. The grain yield was adjusted to 14% moisture content and expressed in ton ha^-1. Results were made on averaging the values of two years. Data were analyzed and the means were compared using computer package"Irristat'' developed by IRRI (IRRI, 1992).

Achievement/Findings:

It may be concluded from the findings that photosensitive modern aromatic rice varieties should be transplanted at the early December for higher productivity. Moreover, the intermediate plant statured BRRI dhan37 and BRRI dhan38 produced higher grain yield (3. 79-4. 0 t ha^-1) irrespective of planting dates.
