Heart Rot Disease of Passur (xylocarpus Mekongensis) Tree in the Sundarbans.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Eleven chemical properties namely Ca (Calcium), Mg (Magnesium), S (Sulfur), Mn (Manganese), Br (Boron), P (Phosphorus), N (Total Nitrogen), Zn (Zinc), Iron (Fe) and Cu (Copper) were analyzed. Electrical conductivity that is soil salinity ranges 12.43ds/m at Dhangmari and 25.18 ds/m at Kashiabad. pH of soil is 7.4 to 8.0, organic matter at Kalabogi is 1.88 to 2.42, at Baniakhali 3.36 to 5.20, at Kashiabad 4.70 to 5.04 and Dhangmari 3.63 to 4.1 % in different depths. Total Nitrogen at all the locations and depths are 0.098 to 0.205 %. Sodium 7.0 to 13.0. 7.00 at Dhangmari and 13 .0 at Kashiabad. Potassium 1.2 to 3.4 whereas calcium 11.75 to 23.24, Magnesium 5.55 to 9.38, Phosphorus 7.6 to 17.8. Sulphur 110.9 to 262.0 and boron 1.35 to 7.08 in different locations and depths. All the analyzed result differ from each location. And Heart rot disease of Passur differs from place to place at different study sites of the Sundarbans. Passur trees are affected (Less than 50% top dead and more than 50% top dead or heart rot) severely at Kalabogi, Baniakhali and Bojboja in the moderately saline water zone, the percentages are 64%, 62% and 60% respectively then followed by Kashiabad 54%, Chunkuri 48%. Very low amount of trees are affected at Supati (17%) in the fresh water zone of the Sundarbans. It is thus a very useful embodiment of information on most aspects of Passur. General concept of heart rot, its significance and infection biology have been provided in relation to environmental factors. The pathogens are identified locally and internationally.

Objectives:

1.To determine the infestation status of passur in the Sundarbans.

2.To determine the environmental factors responsible for heart rot disease of passur.

Methodology:

The following activities were done systematically during July, 2009 to June, 2012. Stem sawing and wood samples were collected for identification of infestation status. It was collected data on infestation, water salinity, soil pH, inundation and siltation from affected and unaffected areas. It was also Collected soil and plant samples, stem, fruit body, leaf, twig and little branches from the selected sites of the Sundarbans for experimental analysis.Soil analysis had been done in soil science laboratory, Khulna University and Soil Resource Development Institute’s Regional Laboratory, Daulatpur, Khulna. In each location, soil samples were taken from 10cm, 20cm and 30cm depths from soil surface.Then the three samples from any particular place were mixed to make one composite soil. After three months the soil samples were sent to the Regional Laboratory of Soil Resource Development Institute, Daulatpur, and Khulna for Physico-chemical analysis. The said institute analyzed all soil samples.The samples were analyzed using Automatic Absorption Spectro Photometer method at the Soil Resources Development Institute (SRDI) laboratory, Khulna. K (Potassium) was analyzed by Automatic Flame Photometer.Collected mixed soil texture (sand, silt and clay components), soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), organic matter were analyzed at Soil Science Discipline, Khulna University by following standard methods.

Achievement/Findings:

Analyzed soil samples and water salinity results vary place to place. The results also vary in different locations. The environmental factors as well as soil factors and water salinity differ from place to place and location to location. So water salinity and soil factors are highly responsible for the affection of the heart rot disease of passur tree in the Sundarbans.Three publications in the International Journal and A Ph. D. thesis were published regarding the study.
