A field experiment was• conducted to study the effect of nitrogen level and split application of Sesbania rostrata as green manure on the yield and yield contributing characters of BRRI dhan 31 at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from May to November 2004. Five levels of N:0% (No). 25% (N1), 50% (N2). 75% (N3) and 100% (N4) of the recommended dose (RD) and six levels of split application of Sesbania rostrata: no application (GMo), 100% as basal (GM  1), 50% as basal + 50% at early tillering (GM2), 33.3% as basal + 33.3% at early tillering + 33.3% at panicle initiation (GM3), 100% at early tillering (GM4) and 100% at panicle initiation (GM5) stage were included in the experiment. The yield and yield contributing characters of BRRI dhan31 except 1000-grain weight were significantly varied due to N treatments. The highest but identical grain yield (4.86 t ha-1) was obtained from the application of 100% and 75% of RD of N. In case of split application of Sesbania rostrata, the highest grain yield (4.57 t ha-1) was achieved in GM2 treatment. Highest grain yield was obtained from interaction of 100% RD of N x Sesbania rostrata applied 50% as basal + 50% at early tillering stage and it was identical with 75% RD of N x Sesbania rostrata applied 50% as basal + 50% at early tillering stage and 50% RD of N x Sesbania rostrata applied 50% as basal + 50% at early tillering stage.

To see the effect of N level and split application of Sesbania rostrata on the performance of transplant aman rice cv. BRRI dhan31.

The experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from May to November 2004. The experimental area was characterized by non-calcareous dark grey floodplain soil belonging to the Old Brahmaputra Floodplain. The experimental field was silty loam in texture with a pH value of 6.8 and contained 0.10% and 1.78% total nitrogen and organic matter, respectively. Two factors i.e. five levels of N: 0% (N0), 25% (N1), 50% (N2), 75% (N3 ) and 100% (N4 , 99.82 kg N ha-1 of the recommended dose (RD) and six levels of split application of Sesbania rostrata no application (GM0), 100% as basal (GM1 , 25 t fresh biomass ha-1 50% as basal+ 50% at early tillering (GM2 ), 33.3% as basal + 33.3% at early tillering + 33.3% at panicle initiation (GM3), 100% at early tillering (GM4) and 100% at panicle initiation (GM5) stage were included in the experiment. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications. Maturity of crops was determined when 90% of the grains become golden yellow in color. The grains were cleaned and finally the weight was adjusted to a moisture content of 14%. The straws were sun dried and the yields of grain and straw plot-1 were converted to t ha-1 . The recorded data were compiled and tabulated for statistical analysis. Analysis of variance was done with the help of computer package MSTAT. The mean difference among the treatments were adjudged with Duncan's Multiple Range Test.

The level of nitrogen showed significant influence on the yield and yield contributing characters of BRRI dhan 31. The highest values of plant height, number of total tillers hill-1 , number of effective tillers hill-1 , panicle length, number of grains panicle-1 grain yield, straw yield and biological yield were observed with the application of 100% RD of N (99.82 kg N ha-1 ) which was statistically followed by others treatments in descending order. The highest grain yield (4.86 t ha-1 ) was obtained with 100% RD of N and the lowest one (3.80 t ha-1 ) from no application of N.  Application of 75% RD of N (74.87 kg N ha-1) produced the highest number of panicles (221.3) m2 and sterile spikelets panicle -1, (33.17). On the other hand, 50% RD of N (49.91 kg N ha-1 produced the highest harvest index (44.44%). Nitrogen level did not exert any influence on 1000-grain weight. In all cases the lowest values were found in control treatment. The highest number of sterile spikelets panicle-1, (38.71) and harvest index (46.52%) were found in 75% RD of N x 100% Sesbania rostrata applied at early tillering stage and 50% RD of N x 100% Sesbania rostrafa applied as basal dose, respectively. On the other hand, plant height, number of effective tillers hill-1 , panicle length, number of panicles m2 , number of grains panicle-1 and 1000-grain weight were failed to show any significant effect on the interaction of nitrogen level and split application of Sesbania rostrata. From the result of the study, it can be concluded that the combined application of N (50% RD) and two equal splits application of Sesbania rostrata i. e. 50% as basal + 50% at early tillering stage proved to be better than basal incorporation of whole amount of Sesbania rostrata. On the other hand, green manuring with Sesbania rostrata saved 50% RD of N.
