Performances of Potato as Influenced by Mustard Oil Cake Application in Different Forms and Methods

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was carried out at the Horticulture Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh duning the period from November, 98 to February 99 to study the effect of different forms of mustard oil cake (MOC) and its different methods of application on the growth and yidd of potato (cv. Diamant) The experiment consisted of 2 forms of mustard oil cake (pov.:dcr form and decomposed form) and 4 methods of application (application of whole amount of MOC as broadcasting during land preparation. application of whole amount of MOC m furrow during sowing application of half MOC in furrow during sowing and rest half as side-dressing during earthing up and application of whole amount of MOC during earthing up), thus constituting 8 treatment combinations, and it was laid out in RCBD with 3 replications. The results demonstrated that yield and most of the yield contributing characters like plant emergence, plant height, number of stems par hill, foliage coverage and weight of tubers per hill were significantly influenced by different forms and application methods of MOC and their combined effect. Higher yield of tuber (33.31 t/ha) was obtained from decomposed form of MOC than powder form (32.18 t/ha).

Objectives:

To study the effect of different forms of mustard oil cake (MOC) and its different methods of application on the growth and yield of potato (cv. Diamant)

Methodology:

The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Distance between blocks and bt!tween plots were 0.75 and 0.60 m respectively. Thus there were altogether 24 plots for the study. Different treatment combinations were assigned randomly to the unit plot of 3.0 m x 1 .5 m.

Achievement/Findings:

The results on the main effect of form of mustard oil cake on the plant height of potato crop at 30. 45, 60 and 75 days after planting have been presented There was significant difference between two forms of mustard oil cake application for plant height. Decomposed form of mustard oil cake produced taller plants (25.07, 43.88, 48.0 I and 53.65 em) than powder form (24.39, 41 .68, 45.14 and 50.75 em) at 30, 45, 60 and 75 days, respectively.))significants increase in plant height with decomposed form of mustard oil cake might be due to the availability of higher amount of NPK which helped the plant to grow taller. Shaw and Robinson ( 1960) reported that decomposed organic manure increased microbial activity followed by increased supply of nutrients particularly NPK . According to Tamhane et a!. (1970), the C:N ratio of a fertile soil was near I 0: I . They reported that this ratio might be possible by using decomposed fonn of organic manure. lqbal et a/. (1992) suggested that any organic manure should be properly decomposed before its application to the soil. Plant height was significantly influenced by different methods of application of mustard oil cake at 30, 45, 60 and 75 DAP . In general, there was an increase in plant height with the passing of time. At 75 DAP. application of whole amount in furrow during sowing gave the tallest plant (55.70 em) which was statistically similar to the application of half MOC in furrow during sowing and rest half as side dressing during earthing up but significantly different from the application of whole amount of l10C as broadcasting during land preparation and application of 'hole amount during earthing up. The effect of the application method of MOC varied probably due to the fact that a large number of roots was concentrated in the furrow and the root received higher quantity of nutrients when MOC was applied in furrow during sowing.The maximum plant height was obtained with the application of full organic manure and chemical fertilizer by dibbling near the base of young banana suckers.
