Study on Seasonal Growth of Mulberry Morus Indica L. Under Different Plantation Systems

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Basic Silkworm Seed Farm (P3 station) in Rajshahi for four seasons from February 1995 to April 1996 corresponding the commercial silkworm rearing seasons, namely-Jaistha (May-June), Bhaduri (August) Agrahyani (October December) and Chaitra (February-March). Seasonal growth study in different mulberry plantation systems indicate that mulberry Morus indica L. plantation in Jaistha (May-June) crop experienced a very high AGA, NAA and TOW followed by Bhaduri. Tree plantation showed greater growth performance over low-cut and bush systems. Growth parameters namely, RGA, NAA, LAA, ALGA, SLA and LWA showed higher value at the early growing stages which gradually decreased with fluctuations at later ages.

Objectives:

To study the season-wise growth parameters of the plant under different plantation systems

Methodology:

Ten years old mulberry plots (low-cut, bush and three) planted with widely cultivated local variety were used as material for this experiment. The experiment was carried out for four seasons corresponding the commercial rearing seasons-Jaistha (May-June), Bhaduri (August) Agrahyani (October-December) and Chaitra (February-March) respectively. The plots were maintained under standard cultural practices. The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with three replications. For low-cut, ten plants were selected for each replications. Ten largest shoots were taken in each harvest. For bush plot five lines were selected for each replication. Ten largest shoots were taken for every harvest in each replication. Ten largest shoots of tree plants were taken for each replication. For each season first harvest was taken one month after pruning. Total five harvests were taken in each season. Each harvest was taken at 15 days interval. After harvesting the shoots, leaves were separated from the stems. Leaf area was measured by Green leaf area metre (cm² ). Dry weight of leaf and stem were taken separately and put in an oven at 80°C for 72 hours till they reached constant weight. Total dry weight (TDW) was calculated by summarizing the values of leaf dry weight and stem dry weight.

Achievement/Findings:

Overall results of seasonal effect on plantation system indicates that in majority of growth attributes tree responded with higher value followed by bush. Low-cut was recorded a poor performer in achieving growth attributes. On the other hand, Jaistha topped the list as performer followed by Bhaduri and Chaitra. Agrahyani was designated as a poor season in achieving growth parameters.
