Transplanted Aman rice followed by sesame is one of the major cropping sequences in the medium saline, irrigation water lacking area of the greater Khulna of Bangladesh which requires suitable varieties of rice and sesame and alternate agronomic options for increasing the system productivity and to cope with weather uncertainty. A study was conducted to identify the combination of rice and sesame varieties and alternate tillage option in Transplanted Aman rice-Sesame sequence at Hetalbunia village under Batiaghata Upazila of Khulna district during July 2011 to May 2012. Rice varieties BRRI dhan41 and sesame varieties, BARITil3, BARITil4, Binatill and Binatil2 with reduced tillage were evaluated and compared with existing BR23 and T-6 with 3-4 tillage in sesame. Results indicated that Aman varieties BR23 or BRRI dhan41 rice followed by either Binatil2 or existing sesame increased the system productivity. Binatil2 and reduced tillage optimized the suboptimal plant population of the existing system and thus increased the system productivity. The adoption of salt tolerant rice variety, BRRI dhan41 and the existing variety BR23; sesame variety BINA til2 and reduced tillage in sesame by the power tiller operated seeder could be scaled out in the medium saline and irrigation water lacking area.

To identify the suitable combination of Aman and sesame varieties under conventional and reduced tillage in rice-sesame cropping system.

The study was conducted during July 2011 to May 2012 at farmers' field of Hetalbunia village under Batiaghata upazila of Khulna district. Six representative adjacent farmer's fields with an area of 2000 m2 were selected where T. Aman-Fallow-Sesame cropping systems practiced over the period of 15 years. The rice varieties, BR23 and BRRI dhan41 were grown in each of the farmers' field. After harvesting of T. Aman rice each field divided in to ten subplots where combination of sesame varieties, Binatil l, Binatil 2, BARI Til 3, BARI Til 4 and existing T-6, and two tillage options, reduced and conventional were randomly assigned. The unit plot size was 50 m2 . In conventional tillage, lands were prepared with 3 ploughings whereas 2 ploughing with power tiller operated seeder in case of reduced tillage. T. Aman rice was transplanted during second week of August using 30-35 days old seedling. The high yielding, photosensitive rice varieties suitable for the study area were harvested in December and sesame were sown at field on 25 February and harvested at maturity last week of May. Both the crops under the cropping system were grown as rain-fed. Crop management practices were followed by the recommendation of BRRI (2011) and BINA (2011). The seeds of improved rice and sesame varieties were collected from Bangladesh Rice research Institute (BRRI and Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA). The T. Aman crops experienced the maximum of soil salinity of 3.36 dS m-1 at ripening phase, whereas the sesame experienced 3.89 to 4.94 dS m-1 from seeding to maturity. Grain and seed yield of rice and sesame were measured from a sample of 10 and 5 m2. respectively. The yield data were recorded from the centre of each plot and expressed as t ha-1 at 14 and 10% moisture for rice and sesame, respectively. Productivity of different cropping and tillage combinations was compared in terms of rice equivalent yield (REY).The statisticai analysis of the REY was done using CropStatt Version 7.2.

The preferred combination of BRRI dhan41 in Aman season followed by Binatil2 with reduced tillage could be demonstrated in more number of diverse fields for adoption. Initiative need to be explored for demonstrating the appropriate inclined plate PTOS for sesame seeding under reduced tillage.
