The focus of the study is to describe the women's attitude towards homestead vegetable production program in Gazipur district. Mirzapur uniop under Gazipur Sadar Upazila was selected for study. Data were collected from the respondents in two villages namely Taltoil and Panshail. A randomely selected sample size of 75 respondents was interviewed. Participation of the rural women in homestead vegetable production (HVP) program was the dependent variable where independent variables were age, education, family size, farm size, annual income, training received by the respondents, organizational participation, contact with extension personnel and respondents husband's attitudes respectively. Statistical measurements like frequency count, percentage, range, mean, standard deviations were used to interpret the data. Co-efficient of correlation was computed in order to explore the relationships between the concerned variables. Through the study 5 percent level of probability was used basis for statistical significance. Majority of the respondents belonged to young-aged having primary level education with small farm size and low income and high organizational has medium and high participation in homestead vegetable production program. Farm size, training received, organizational participation and husbands' attitude towards their wive's participation showed significant positive relationship with their participation in homestead vegetable production program. Data shows that the problems faced by the rural women in respect of "Shortage of irrigation water for vegetable production" was the most serious problems with ranking 1''. High price of inputs such as seed, fertilizer, pesticide etc. was the second problem.

To describe the selected characteristics of respondents, to explore relationship between dependent and independent variables and to identify problem faced by the rural women in participating homestead vegetable production programme.

The study was conducted in two villages of Mirzapur Union under Gazipur Sadar Upazila of Gazipur District. In Sadar Upazila there are 5 unions. Updated list of 200 homestead vegetable growing households of the rural women was prepared with the help of Block Supervisor (BS) from two villages. Then from the women population of vegetable growers, 75 respondents (35%) were selected randomly representing all categories of farmers, namely landless, marginal, small, medium, and large from said two villages. An interview schedule was prepared for collection of data in accordance with objectives of the study. Data were collected by the researcher themselves from 14 January to 12 February 2002 with the help of BSs of that area through face-to-face interview. The selected characteristics of respondents' of this study were age, education, marital status, family size, farm size, annual income, organizational participation, training program received by the respondents, contact with extension personnel, husbands' attitude towards their wives' participation where participation Collected data were compiled, coded, tabulated for processing and analysis in accordance with the objective of the study. Descriptive statistics like frequency counts, range, number and percentage and as well an average were calculated in explaining the descriptive data. Correlation coefficient was used to assess the relationship between the selected characteristics and extent of participation by the rural women's participation in homestead vegetables production program. Throughout the study 5 percent level of probability with an accompanying 95 percent confidence level was used as the basis of rejecting null hypothesis.

Majority (57.3%) of the rural women were between 16 and 30 years of age. A little over 42.7% of the respondents were between 31 and 50 years of age.  Most of the respondent (90.7% were married. Very few (5.3%) were unmarried. 2.7% of the respondents were separated and 1.3% were widowed. In the context of level of education, about 30.7% of the respondents had no schooling. Majority of the respondents (61.4%) had primary level education while a considerable number of them (5.3%) were secondary level education. A few (1.3%) were HSC passed and 1.3% were Bachelor. Seventy two percent  of the respondents had small family size ranging from 2 to 4. Twenty seven percent of the respondents had medium family size of 5 to 8 members. While 1.3% of the respondents had large family size having above 8. Family type of the study area were that a large number of respondents (70.7%) had nuclear type of family and the rest (29.3%) had extended type of family. Farm size shows that percent distribution of landless, marginal, small, medium and large farmers were 6.67%, 18.67%,57.33%,9.33% and 8% respectively. There is no significant relationship between farm size and their participation in homestead vegetable production programme." According to the computed correlation co-efficient, the relationship of age, education, annual income and contact with extension personnel were not significant. The existing relationship of farm size, training received by the respondents, organizational participation and respondents husband's attitudes, were positively significant . These indicate that farm size plays an important role in homestead vegetable production activities. And the respondents receive more the training; more is the participation in homestead vegetable production programme. Data also revealed that participation in different organization helped increase homestead vegetable production among the women. The findings also support that the husbands had more favourable attitude towards their wives participation in homestead vegetable production programme. Besides that the relationship between family size and participation in homestead vegetable production programme were negatively significant. This reveals that increase of the size of family, could play negative role on the participation of the respondents in homestead vegetable production programme.
