Crop Residue and Weed Management of Permanent Raised Beds in Rice-wheat Systems for the Year 2011-12

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In wheat-Mungbean-DS Aman pattern, the higher grain yield of Wheat was (3.38 t/ha) produced by permanent beds with 100% crop residue retention. Moreover, an average wheat grain yield was better in different bed practices than conventional practices. Mungbean yield was higher in different bed practices than conventional practices. In Aman season, average grain yield of DS Aman was (4.46 t/ha) in different bed practices and in conventional practice was (3.39 t/ha).

Objectives:

i To compare the effect of crop residue retention and herbicide use for weed control on the productivity of permanent beds

ii) To compare the agro-economic productivity and resource use efficiency of permanent bed system and conventional method.

Methodology:

The experiment is a long-term experiment and conducted at BRRI, Gazipur. Five crop establishment options viz., T₁-permanent beds with 100% crop residue retention ; T₂-permanent bed with 50% crop residue retention; T3- permanent bed without crop residue retention; T₄-semi permanent bed (new beds with conventional tillage in every wheat season) and T₅-conventional (flat), and two weed control methods viz, (W₁)Non Selective herbicide + Selective herbicide + 1 hand weeding and (W₂) Non Selective Herbicide +2 hand weeding for wheat and rice and (W₁)Non Selective herbicide + 1 hand weeding and (W₂) 1 hand weeding for mungbean were evaluated in RCB design with three replications in Wheat-Mungbean-DS Aman rice cropping pattern. For the treatments with bed, 70 cm (40 cm top and 30 cm furrow) wide beds with 15 cm height were made. For the treatments with herbicide, non-selective herbicide Gramoxan was used in transition period between mungbean and rice and the transition period between wheat and mungbean. Moreover, selective Herbicide Megafuran 10WP was used in Wheat and Rice. In Rabi season, wheat was sown on 28 Nov. 2011 and harvested on 13 March 2012. Again mungbean was sown on 23 March 2012 after wheat harvest and harvested on 18-23 May 2012 and after mungbean DS rice (BRRI dhan33) was sown on 15 July 2012. DS (BRRI dhan33) rice was harvested on 08 Nov 2012 and was followed by Wheat. Other management practices were followed as per recommendation.

Achievement/Findings:

In Wheat-Mungbean-DS Aman pattern significantly higher grain yields of wheat and Mungbean were (3.38 t/ha) and (0.89 t/ha) respectively produced by permanent beds with 100 % crop residue retention. Moreover, average wheat and mungbean grain yield were better in different bed practices than conventional. Higher grain yields of rice was found in permanent beds. Average grain yields of DS Aman was (4.15 t/ha) obtained better from different permanent beds than conventional (3.39 t/ha). The Rice equivalent yield (REY) of Wheat-Mungbean- DS Rice cropping pattern was significantly higher in permanent bed practices (13.15) than flat (conventional) method. As REY was higher in bed than flat method, Gross margin was found better in bed practices due to less cost involvement in different management. Irrigation water saved in raised bed over flat method in wheat (11%), Mungbean (14%) and rice (24%), respectively.Moreover, Seed and fertilizers were saved in raised bed over flat method 25% and 20% respectively.
